RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Immortals and Footloose (58 comments)

by RT Staff on Tuesday, Mar. 06 2012, 01:26 PM

This week on home video, we again have a wide variety of films to choose from, ranging from the highly acclaimed to the widely panned. First off, we want to let you know that Universal is celebrating their 100th anniversary with a ton of Blu-ray reissues, like The Blues Brothers, Charade, Duck Soup, and The Deer Hunter. There's also a new Blu-ray for the Hitchcock thriller To Catch a Thief, and Season 1 of the hugely popular HBO series Game of Thrones is available. As for other new releases, we've got Tarsem Singh's Greek myth actioner, Craig Brewer's '80s remake, and Adam Sandler's latest Razzie nominee. Then, we've got a highly acclaimed documentary, a Certified Fresh romance, Pedro Almodovar's psychodrama, and a couple of cult classics on Blu-ray for the first time. RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Oscar-winner Hugo Hits Shelves (46 comments)

by Ryan Fujitani and Tim Ryan on Tuesday, Feb. 28 2012, 03:02 PM

Perhaps it's because the Oscars were last night, or perhaps it's just because it's a slow week for DVD releases, but there isn't a whole lot going on in the world of home video this week. The biggest news we have is that Martin Scorsese's latest, a family film and loving tribute to the cinema, is available tomorrow, after having taken home five statues last night. After that, we've got a spy spoof sequel, a failed bromance (of sorts), a critically acclaimed Mexican drama, and a new Criterion edition of a Louis Malle film. See below for the full list!

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Puss in Boots and J. Edgar (30 comments)

by Ryan Fujitani and Tim Ryan on Wednesday, Feb. 22 2012, 11:15 AM

This week on home video, we've got a number of new releases that will probably be of interest to the discriminating movie watcher. Among those we won't be mentioning in the article are the Certified Fresh doc about pioneering band Fishbone called Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone, the poorly reviewed Channing Tatum/Al Pacino crime thriller The Son of No One, and the inspirational (but formulaic) sports drama The Mighty Macs. Aside from those, however, we still have a solid selection, ranging from an entertaining animated film to a Clint Eastwood-directed biopic, from an acclaimed drama with a powerhouse performance to a heist comedy starring Eddie Murphy in prime form. RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: The Rum Diary and Take Shelter (60 comments)

by RT Staff on Tuesday, Feb. 14 2012, 02:25 PM

This week on home video, we've got an interesting mish-mash of movies to mention. We'll kick things off with the new "Johnny Depp as Hunter S. Thompson proxy" movie and the psychological thriller featuring a powerhouse Michael Shannon performance. Then, we've got Brazil's top moneymaker (ever!), the second installment (and "full sequence") of a horror movie that'll leave a bad taste in your mouth, and an acclaimed documentary about the inner city. Rounding things out are a low-budget indie comedy and an American war movie classic. Click through for the full list!

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part I (79 comments)

by Ryan Fujitani and Tim Ryan on Tuesday, Feb. 07 2012, 12:40 PM

Last week was especially robust with new releases, so it's not surprising that only a few new items of note are hitting shelves this week. Among the rereleases are the George Cukor classic A Star Is Born, the 1967 James Bond parody Casino Royale, the 1963 ensemble screwball comedy It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World, and the romance Love Story. The new releases include the latest installment of a certain vampire love saga, the third film starring a lovable stoner duo, and Roland Emmerich's pseud-historical period thriller. Then, we've got the highest rated documentary of 2011, another Disney classic in hi-def, and a couple of films from a French New Wave auteur. Click through for the full list!

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Drive, Transformers 3, and More (55 comments)

by Ryan Fujitani and Tim Ryan on Tuesday, Jan. 31 2012, 04:21 AM

This week on home video, we've got a long list comprised almost entirely of new releases. Kicking things off are the Ryan Gosling-powered arthouse action movie and the Michael Bay-directed giant robot movie. Then we've got a sci-fi thriller, a horror "prequel," a not-so-funny dramedy, and a psychological thriller whose stellar cast couldn't raise its Tomatometer. After that, we've got an import from a Japanese auteur, a father-daughter bonding flick, an acclaimed music documentary, and finally, the 50th Anniversary Blu-ray of an American classic. RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: 50/50, Real Steel, and Paranormal Activity 3 (46 comments)

by Ryan Fujitani and Tim Ryan on Tuesday, Jan. 24 2012, 01:57 PM

We've got a lot going on this week in the home video department, and thankfully, most of it is relatively good. First up, though we won't be mentioning them outside of this intro, there are a handful of nifty Blu-ray reissues hitting shelves: a few Alfred Hitchcock films (Notorious, Rebecca, and Spellbound) are getting the hi-def treatment, as well as a couple of Woody Allen classics (Annie Hall and Manhattan). Oh, and if you're into fad workout programs, you might be interested to know that the Insanity line of training videos are also being released. Otherwise, we've got one of the best-reviewed wide releases of the year, a robotic underdog story, and the latest in Paranormal Activity. Then there's the sex trade thriller starring Rachel Weisz, the indie horror film with the crazy third act, and a quirky teen romance by... Gus Van Sant? Lastly, there are two new Criterions hitting shelves, so we'll be covering those as well. Click through for the full list!

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: The Ides of March Has Arrived (24 comments)

by Ryan Fujitani on Tuesday, Jan. 17 2012, 05:05 PM

This week on home video, we've got an interesting mix of really good and really bad (oh, so bad). But before we get to those, let's mention some of the other items coming out this week that we won't be talking about: The Robin Williams classic Good Morning, Vietnam is getting a 25th Anniversary Blu-ray, Criterion releases a new Blu-ray of Steven Soderbergh's Traffic, and the recent Journey to the Center of the Earth gets the hi-def 3D treatment... you know, for the kiddies. As far as new stuff, there's the George Clooney directed political drama starring Ryan Gosling, the new Christian film from the makers of Fireproof, two of the moldiest movies to come out in 2011, and a retro coming-of-age tale. Finally, Criterion is also introducing its new transfer of a Luis Bunuel classic featuring one of Catherine Deneuve's most iconic roles. Click through to see the full list!

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Moneyball Slides into (Your) Home (54 comments)

by Ryan Fujitani and Tim Ryan on Tuesday, Jan. 10 2012, 12:34 PM

Alright, now that we've got that terrible baseball pun out of the way, let's get down to business. Before we get into this week's new releases, however, we do need to mention that Universal Studios is celebrating its 100th anniversary with new DVD editions and/or Blu-rays of some of their best films, such as Do the Right Thing, Apollo 13, Babe, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Schindler's List, and more, so be on the lookout for those at your local stores. As for the new stuff, we've got the baseball film featuring a Brad Pitt performance that some have said evokes memories of Robert Redford at his prime, a new action flick starring Jason Statham and Clive Owen, and an Anna Faris rom-com. Then, in the limited release department, there's Jackie Chan's latest film, Vera Farmiga's directorial debut, and a typically auteurist vision of European culture from Jean-Luc Godard. RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Contagion Spreads to Home Video (62 comments)

by Ryan Fujitani and Tim Ryan on Tuesday, Jan. 03 2012, 03:28 PM

This week on home video, we've got a couple of solid new releases, a couple of so-so features, a couple of bombs, and an impressive three-movie collection at a very affordable price. Steven Soderbergh's latest, a star-studded epidemic film, and the highest grossing independent Irish film of all time come home. Next up, the Guy Pearce/Katie Holmes-powered haunted house movie and a medical conspiracy thriller starring Chris Evans, followed by a joyless creature feature and the Sarah Jessica Parker vehicle that rehashes her Sex and the City character in a more domestic setting. Last but not least, we've got a 3-pack of some of the most iconic Westerns every filmed. Click through for the full list!

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Final Destination 5 and Apollo 18 (56 comments)

by Ryan Fujitani and Tim Ryan on Tuesday, Dec. 27 2011, 02:17 PM

It's shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that the home video choices this week are rather slim; most studios try to make sure they have all of their best stuff ready to go before Christmas, naturally. With that in mind, we bring you an abbreviated edition of RT on DVD, focusing on just five new releases that are hitting shelves. For those of you who are also avid television-watchers, some items of interest we won't be covering include Season 2 of the animated series Archer, the first seasons of two Showtime dramas The Borgias and Shameless, and the first season of IFC sitcom The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret, which stars Arrested Development alumni David Cross and Will Arnett. That said, we will be covering two horror movies, a raunchy comedy, a Romanian film, and a fascinating documentary. Click through for the full list!

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Midnight in Paris and Warrior (53 comments)

by RT Staff on Monday, Dec. 19 2011, 05:20 PM

This week in home video, a number of notable new releases are hitting store shelves. First up, we've got a couple of films that have already generated a bit of awards buzz: Woody Allen's latest (Midnight in Paris) and an MMA drama (Warrior). Then, we've got a Certified Fresh inspirational kid flick, a couple of thrillers, a timely financial drama, a British coming of age tale, a dark comedy, and a movie from Japan that sort of defies categorization. Check out the full list!

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Kung Fu Panda 2 and Rise of Planet of the Apes (62 comments)

by Tim Ryan and Alex Vo on Tuesday, Dec. 13 2011, 02:03 PM

This week in home video, we've got five Certified Fresh flicks, including the sequel to an animated favorite, a big franchise reboot, and a smart remake of a 1980s cult favorite. Our lineup this week: Kung Fu Panda 2, with Jack Black and Angelina Jolie; Rise of the Planet of the Apes, starring James Franco and Andy Serkis; and Fright Night, featuring Anton Yelchin and Colin Farrell. Plus, we've got a stylish civil rights documentary, an oddball martial arts mystery, a pair of B-movie classics from Japan, and a classic holiday musical. Check out the full list of new Blu-rays below!

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: The Help and Cowboys & Aliens (75 comments)

by Ryan Fujitani and Tim Ryan on Wednesday, Dec. 07 2011, 09:34 AM

This week on home video, we've got a handful of big releases that came out earlier this year; while a couple of them did surprisingly well, a couple of them fell far below expectations, and another one pretty much turned out the way we all thought it would. First up is the Emma Stone and Viola Davis-powered drama about race relations, followed by a sci-fi genre mash-up that should have been better than it was. Then, we've got a children's film starring Jim Carrey, a smart retro spy thriller, and the sequel to a wildly popular comedy from a couple years back. In the reissue department, we've got a new Criterion Blu-ray for a Hitchcock classic, a popular franchise box set, and a Blu-ray for an historical WWII epic. Click through for the full list!

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Friends with Benefits and 30 Minutes or Less (76 comments)

by Ryan Fujitani and Tim Ryan on Tuesday, Nov. 29 2011, 01:52 PM

As you can probably surmise from the subheadline of this week's column, the new releases on home video cover a wide variety of topics. From a kid flick to a sci-fi drama to a sex comedy, from a Herzog documentary (he's so good at those, isn't he?) to a twee indie dramedy to a horror-comedy, from a romantic drama to a crime caper to a feelgood Paul Rudd vehicle, we've said it before but we'll say it again: there's probably a little something in here for everyone. With the holiday season in full effect, we should start seeing some good releases, so let's start with this week's selections.

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Super 8 and Conan the Barbarian (109 comments)

by Ryan Fujitani and Tim Ryan on Monday, Nov. 21 2011, 02:25 PM

This week on home video, we've got an interesting mix of choices, and at least a couple of them may be a bit controversial. As for items we won't be discussing at length: there are new Blu-rays for films like The Three Amigos, Rushmore (the existing Criterion edition), and ESPN's 30 for 30 series (which we covered when it first arrived on DVD). The big titles this week are J.J. Abrams' sci-fi treat, an update on a classic fantasy hero, and the latest of Robert Rodriguez's Spy Kids films. Then we've got a French drama centered on the Holocaust experience, a unique look at the Hussein family, a controversial silent film, and a bona fide courtroom classic. RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Larry Crowne and Beginners (61 comments)

by Ryan Fujitani and Tim Ryan on Tuesday, Nov. 15 2011, 02:25 PM

One might be inclined to think that the fact we're leading off this week's column with Larry Crowne is an indication of a fairly dry selection of home video choices, but one would be wrong. Granted, most of the noteworthy choices are older films getting the hi-def treatment, but they're great choices nonetheless. We didn't even have time to mention, for example, Blu-ray rereleases of Evil Dead 2 or Metropolis. What we do have this week is a directorial misfire by Tom Hanks (co-starring Julia Roberts), a heartfelt romance starring Ewan McGregor, and a strange indie road film. On top of that, Criterion is releasing new Blu-rays of a Jean Renoir masterpiece and an acclaimed trilogy, and we've got new editions of Infernal Affairs, West Side Story, and My Fair Lady. So, overall, not a terrible week at all!

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Harry Potter's Final Chapter Arrives (97 comments)

by Ryan Fujitani and Tim Ryan on Tuesday, Nov. 08 2011, 12:50 PM

There are a lot of Blu-ray reissues due out this week, though few of them boast many extras that make them worth mentioning here. These include hi-def versions of The Cannonball Run, Blue Velvet, 1962's Mutiny on the Bounty, Little Big Man, The Fisher King, and, of course, the cult classic Frankenhooker. What we do have this week ranges from epic greatness (the final chapter of the Harry Potter series, an Ingmar Bergman classic, two acclaimed HBO miniseries) to middling mediocrity (the Jason Bateman/Ryan Reynolds body swap movie, a failed Ayn Rand adaptation). In between all of that, we have one curious experiment that sort of defies conventional cinematic definition. So read on for the full list!

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Crazy, Stupid, Love & Cars 2 & Water for Elephants (52 comments)

by Ryan Fujitani and Tim Ryan on Tuesday, Nov. 01 2011, 02:25 PM

This week brings us another handful of interesting releases on home video, with a mixture of Certified Fresh choices and critical duds. Notable "also-ran"s for this week's column include both the 1951 adaptation of A Christmas Story and the 1988 Bill Murray version Scrooged, as well as the Robin Williams Peter Pan tale Hook and a Blu-ray set for the Toy Story trilogy, all ideal for the holidays. George Clooney's Confessions of a Dangerous Mind also gets the hi-def treatment, as does the British miniseries Brideshead Revisited. That said, we'll be focusing on the recent Steve Carell/Ryan Gosling romcom, Pixar's most recent sequel, and a Robert Pattinson/Reese Witherspoon drama. Then we've got Errol Morris's latest doc, a faith-based Christmas story, Joel Schumacher's hostage movie, and a creepy silent era classic. See below for the full list!

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Captain America and Winnie the Pooh (129 comments)

by Ryan Fujitani and Tim Ryan on Tuesday, Oct. 25 2011, 01:40 PM

This turned out to be one of those good weeks on home video, thanks to a few rather notable releases. Criterion is offering some good ones (minor Antonioni film Identification of a Woman, Island of Lost Souls, and a Blu-ray of Dazed and Confused), and giant monster classic Destroy All Monsters gets the Blu-ray treatment. A decent martial arts epic (Shaolin) hits shelves, as well as a Certified Fresh Finnish dark comedy based on an evil Santa Claus (Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale). Aside from those, however, the ones we'll be focusing on include one of Marvel's big summer hits, a reboot of a beloved storybook character, and a British sci-fi hit. Then we've got a quiet dramedy, a controversial shock flick, one of Coppola's classics on Blu-ray, and Spielberg's big dino trilogy. See below for the full list!
