RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Resident Evil and The American (96 comments)

by RT Staff on Tuesday, Dec. 28 2010, 04:30 AM

Maybe it's because it's the end of the year, and the assumption is that most of the gift-giving is done and over with, but this week brings us precious few choices in home video. First off, we've got the latest George Clooney vehicle, in which he plays a contemplative international operative. Then, we've got the latest in a popular video game-based franchise. To round things out, there are also a couple of poorly reviewed dramas, one starring a former WWE star and one from Joel Schumacher. The majority of the remaining choices are direct-to-dvd releases, so we limited our list to new titles. Have at it, and we'll see you next year!

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Easy A, Salt, and Wall Street (137 comments)

by RT Staff on Tuesday, Dec. 21 2010, 04:19 AM

Unlike last week, when we had a wealth of popular Certified Fresh choices, this week brings a much smaller selection of new releases. Most of them, in fact, are for direct-to-dvd films and bad horror movies you haven't heard of. With that in mind, we bring you the five new releases and one boxset of a popular animated show's parody of the original Star Wars trilogy. It may not be a whole lot to choose from, but there may still be a few things of interest here, so check them out!

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Despicable Me and The A-Team (115 comments)

by RT Staff on Tuesday, Dec. 14 2010, 05:18 AM

This week, we've got a slew of new releases, and for a change, a decent number of them are Certified Fresh! First up, we've got an animated film that surprised critics and audiences, as well as a big budget blockbuster that disappointed most. Then we've got Ben Affleck's latest directorial effort, Zack Snyder's first animated effort, and another collaboration between Adam McKay and Will Ferrell. Then we've got a highly entertaining documentary, the return of an ugly nanny, an indie hit, and collection of American films from Criterion. All in all, it's not a bad week for home video, so check them out!

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Dream A Little Bigger with Inception (89 comments)

by RT Staff on Tuesday, Dec. 07 2010, 04:18 AM

This week on home video, we've got what many of you have been waiting for. A few hints: it stars Leonardo DiCaprio, it was directed by Christopher Nolan, and you've referenced it at least five times since July when talking about your dreams (even if you didn't like it). Then, we've got the final installment of an animated Dreamworks franchise, a collection of excellent made-for-TV sports documentaries, and a Certified Fresh doc on the war in Afghanistan. Lastly, we've also got a couple of psycho-thrillers that have gotten the Criterion Collection treatment, and one massive collection from one of the major studios. Rest assured that the last item alone will ensure that this week pretty much does have something for everyone, so check out the list!

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Vampires and Vikings and Sorcerers, Oh My! (85 comments)

by RT Staff on Tuesday, Nov. 30 2010, 04:18 PM

This week, we've got oodles of mystical, magical mayhem on offer in the home video department. The latest in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight Saga hits the market, alongside a very badly reviewed spoof. Then there's a viking actioner set during the Crusades, and two films from Disney that sort of overlap each other in story, one being a classic animated short and the other being a modern, live-action interpretation of the same. Lastly, we've also got a new rom-com starring Justin Long and Drew Barrymore and an action-comedy with Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. Most of these hover somewhere in middle-of-the-road territory, but there's some genre fun to be had, so check out the choices and pick accordingly.

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: The Expendables Will Blow Up Your TV (99 comments)

by RT Staff on Monday, Nov. 22 2010, 03:02 PM

This week on home video, the big item of note also happens to be filled with some of the biggest guys in the movies - literally - as Sylvester Stallone's ode to classic action flicks, The Expendables, hits store shelves everywhere. Then, we've also got the latest movie to rely on Julia Roberts's charm, a puzzling documentary on Joaquin Phoenix's alleged retirement from acting (and subsequent foray into rap), and a Certified Fresh British thriller starring Gemma Arterton. Then we've got a collection of classic cinematic Americana, a legendary sci-fi movie, and the latest Disney film to be let out of the vault. So check out the selection and see if anything makes your stocking-stuffer list.

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: The Last Airbender Lands on Home Video (130 comments)

by RT Staff on Tuesday, Nov. 16 2010, 04:45 PM

This week on home video, we've got a big blockbuster, a smaller one, a couple of indie hits, a couple of old classics, and some beloved children's classics. We kick it off with the latest from M. Night Shyamalan, whose recent films have been critical disappointments, and an unconventional family dramedy that's already generating a bit of Oscar buzz. Then we've got an urban comedy with a lesson to teach, a documentary on the "worst movie of all time," and a kids' film with talking animals. In the reissue department, we've got a slick thriller from the '50s, a masterpiece from Charlie Chaplin, and a collection of animated specials from the Peanuts gang. Not a whole lot to jump up and shout about, but definitely a few quality choices, so check them out!

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Scott Pilgrim vs. Ramona and Beezus (113 comments)

New week, new releases. Last week, hordes of Pixar fans (and their children) were delighted with the release of Toy Story 3; this week, we have another fan favorite, albeit a niche choice that didn't do as well in the theaters. Then we've got another decent kid flick, the latest Adam Sandler comedy, and a "serious" Zac Efron movie. Then we've got complete collections for two staples of '80s reruns (both with unique packaging), a psychological thriller that shocked and confused a lot of people, and a definitive film collection for a legendary director. If anything, we've got variety this week, so keep an eye out for the ones you've been waiting for!

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Toy Story 3 Finally Comes Home (183 comments)

by RT Staff on Wednesday, Nov. 03 2010, 05:08 AM

This week, there just weren't very many brand new releases, period. Of course, there is the one big new release that tons of folks have been waiting for (here's a hint: it's a Pixar movie), as well as the home video release for a well-received WWII miniseries, so you can't go wrong with those. But most of this week's heft comes from the new editions (primarily on Blu-Ray) of older films. With that in mind, we've got another award-winning classic war film, a couple of iconic musicals, and a bit of 1980s nostalgia. Check out the full list!

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Back to the Future and the Alien Anthology on Blu-Ray (138 comments)

by RT Staff on Wednesday, Oct. 27 2010, 09:03 AM

This week on home video, we've got an interesting assortment of titles to present. First off, we've got the requisite new releases, which are comprised of one sequel to a popular novel-based franchise, one poorly reviewed sequel to another popular franchise, and an original indie film that received high marks from critics. Beyond that, we've got some amazing choices in the reissue department; we hope you won't mind a little bit of '80s nostalgia, because we've got one of the most beloved adventure sagas and one of the most beloved sci-fi horror franchises both in complete Blu-Ray sets. Then we have an icon of late night television making his mark, and a couple of Criterion editions that will be popular with relatively specific audiences. Have yourself a gander; I dare you not to like at least one thing on this week's list...

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: A New Apocalypse Now Blu-Ray and Predators (145 comments)

by RT Staff on Tuesday, Oct. 19 2010, 04:04 AM

This week on home video, we're lucky to get another great selection of titles to share with you. While the new releases - which include an action/horror reboot and a Certified Fresh indie - are relatively decent, the real treasures are to be found in the Blu-Ray reissues of some well-liked films and bona fide classics. We've got masterpieces from Hitchcock, Kurosawa, and Coppola, a little something for the midnight screening cult classic crowd, and a few modern favorites to round out the bunch. Peep it, yo.

This week, we encounter a familiar problem in the world of home video, namely a lack of quality choices. While there are a few standouts, to be sure, the majority of new releases are either television box sets or direct-to-dvd movies. However, we've done our best to weed out a few of the good choices this week, so have a look at what's out, and let's keep our fingers crossed for a better selection as more of the summer blockbusters slowly find their way to the home video market.

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: The Karate Kid and A Nightmare on Elm Street (62 comments)

This week on home video, we actually had too many good items to choose from, so we were actually forced to cut down by a few. With that in mind, we'd like to point out that, in addition to the titles mentioned below, you can also pick up the Robocop trilogy, Abel Ferrara's original Bad Lieutenant, and Michael Mann's The Last of the Mohicans on Blu-Ray this week. Otherwise, you can read on to see all the new releases we have this week, as well as reissued classics of film noir, 80s horror, and 70s Ozploitation, as well as a Disney film and a Tarantino/Rodriguez collaboration. Here's to hoping for more good weeks!

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Iron Man 2 and Get Him to the Greek (72 comments)

by RT Staff on Wednesday, Sep. 29 2010, 04:10 AM

Several films chose this week to come out on DVD for the first time, and whether you're looking for rousing action, raunchy comedy, feelgood documentary, period romance, or icy chills, there's something in this week's bag that should fit the bill. In addition, we've got a few special releases of older films that will interest fans of Terrence Malick, Nagisa Oshima, and classic adventure flicks. So have yourself a look-see at the selection we've put together, and perhaps one or two of these titles will find their way onto your shelves.

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Robin Hood Steals Its Way onto DVD (80 comments)

by RT Staff on Wednesday, Sep. 22 2010, 04:58 AM

After a strong week of new releases on home video last Tuesday, we return to a relatively mediocre offering this week. While several popular new TV shows (e.g. Modern Family, Community, Spartacus, Human Target) saw first-season compilations released (timely releases at that, considering many of them return to their regular schedules this week), the feature film selection might leave you a bit wanting. With that said, we've compiled just a handful of them that might have some appeal, so read on to check out what we've got lined up.

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: MacGruber and Killers (115 comments)

by Ryan Fujitani on Wednesday, Sep. 08 2010, 04:03 AM

The dearth of truly quality movie DVDs continues, as most of the brand new releases this week of films that came out this year are quite solidly Rotten. Having said that, we've also attempted to fish out a few good re-releases, as well as one indie film that was Certified Fresh but didn't see much action at the box office. There were also a handful of Blu-Ray titles which were simply reissues of previous releases (Forbidden Planet and Stardust, for example), so we decided to leave those off the list. So have a look and see if anything tickles your fancy.

RT on DVD & Blu-ray: The Girl With the Hot Tub Time Machine (2 comments)

This week on DVD and Blu-ray: Swedish sleeper hit The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, would-be cult '80s Cusack throwback Hot Tub Time Machine, the reprehensible Donnie Darko sequel S. Darko, and the underrated Gentlemen Broncos -- talk about a rocky ride.

Unfortunately, we're looking at another weak week of home video releases, so we're only able to bring you a small handful of notable releases. As usual, we've got the brand new films out, a couple of which were hardly earthshattering material. But then we've also got a couple of gritty British crime thrillers that might satisfy, and to round out the bunch, we've got a horror cult classic on Blu-Ray for the first time. So take a look at what we've filtered out of all the garbage and hope with us for a brighter future on home video!

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: The Back-Up Plan and LOST (112 comments)

by RT Staff on Wednesday, Aug. 25 2010, 04:41 AM

This year so far seems like it's been a bit of a letdown for many people; while there have been some excellent standout films, the feelings seems to be that everyone was hoping for more than we've gotten so far. With that in mind, a lot of the brand new DVD releases are, of course, going to follow suit. So brace yourselves for the likes of The Back-Up Plan and Survival of the Dead, both of which were poorly reviewed. But once you move past those, we've actually got some decent choices, like a couple of indie hits that went unnoticed, a couple of highly acclaimed TV shows in their entirety, a sci-fi cult classic, a grindhouse cult classic, and even some plain old classics. Have yourself a gander.

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: The Book of Eli, Date Night (8 comments)

by Luke Goodsell on Thursday, Aug. 19 2010, 03:25 PM

This week, RT on DVD & Blu-ray is back with Denzel Washington stalking the post-apocalyptic wastes in The Hughes Brothers' The Book of Eli, plus comedic mishaps with Tina Fey and Steve Carell in Date Night. We've also got one of the year's best in acclaimed French gangster drama A Prophet, the return of Amelie director Jean-Pierre Jenuet, Australia's World War I drama Beneath Hill 60, and Sandra Bullock in the Oscar-winning football flick, The Blind Side.
