by Greg Dean Schmitz on Friday, Aug. 22 2014, 04:15 PM

As we continue through the dog days of summer on our way to Labor Day weekend and the start of the fall movie season, this Weekly Ketchup covers a particularly slow news cycle. Instead of superhero movies, we mostly got movies about animals (Noah's Ark, The Jungle Book: Origins) and other creatures (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), and long-running novel series stars (The Destroyer, Mack Bolan, and The November Man 2).

by Greg Dean Schmitz on Friday, Jul. 25 2014, 04:17 PM

Every July, the worlds of movies, TV, games, and yes, comic books, collide for four days in San Diego, giving us dozens of announcements, which is far more than we can fit into just one Weekly Ketchup. So, we're splitting the week up, starting with this Weekly Ketchup devoted to everything that is not one of the big three S's of San Diego Comic-Con: Superheroes, Science Fiction, and Sequels (mostly). There will be another Weekly Ketchup in a few days, after SDCC, to cover all of the biggest announcements and revelations.

by Greg Dean Schmitz on Friday, Jul. 11 2014, 04:20 PM

Following a very slow 4th of July holiday week, Hollywood got back into action this week, mostly with the sorts of development stories that won't fit in as well later in the month when San Diego Comic-Con will dominate. Included in the mix here are an unusual number of movies with animation connections (Dumbo, Superbago, The Incredible Mr. Limpet), as well as new roles for Alec Baldwin, Elle Fanning, Scarlett Johansson, and Dwayne Johnson.

This week's Ketchup comes to you in a week where the Friday is also the 4th of July! So, what that meant for the movie development news world is that there were a few less stories, but even so, some cool gems showed up. We've got a very timely soccer movie announcement (Victory), cool casting for Idris Elba and Tom Hardy in what might be significant roles, and new films from the directors of Downfall, Babel, Jane Eyre, and The Secret World of Arriety. Our biggest story (Marvel's Ant-Man and its lack of a director) actually broke out late last week, for example. Other movies addressed down below include Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight, biopics for athletes Joe Namath and Jesse Owens, and remakes of Cliffhanger and Stargate.
