Critics Consensus: The White Ribbon Is Certified Fresh

by Tim Ryan on Wednesday, Dec. 30 2009, 03:43 PM comment16 Comments

The final week of the year brings no wide releases, but Michael Haneke's Palme d'Or winner The White Ribbon hits theaters in limited release. What do the critics have to say? Michael Haneke's films are not for the faint of heart. Best known in the United States for Cache and Funny Games, the Austrian maestro makes haunting thrillers that burn into your psyche. Critics say his latest, the Certified Fresh The White Ribbon, ranks among his very best. Set in a small German town in the days before World War I, the film tells the tale of a series of horrible events that at first seem random -- until it appears there's a sinister explanation. The critics say The White Ribbon is hypnotic, disturbing, and ultimately thought-provoking -- another fine effort from a director that refuses to compromise his unsettling vision.

RT's 2010 Movie Preview -- Happy New Year!

by Tim Ryan on Wednesday, Dec. 30 2009, 02:45 PM comment Comment

It may be hard to believe, but a brand new year is already upon us. As we bid farewell to 2009, it's already time to look ahead: what does Hollywood have to offer us in 2010? We'll, we at RT have a handy little guide to the most anticipated flicks, the surest box office bets, the movies you'll be looking back on fondly a year from now. As usual, the forthcoming year's slate leans heavily on sequels and remakes. But that's not a bad thing: such surefire hits as Toy Story 3, Iron Man 2, and the first part of the conclusion to the Harry Potter franchise are all locked and loaded. Getting the reboot treatment are Tron and Nightmare on Elm Street, to name a couple. Plus, the new year promises brand the latest films from Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott, and Michel Gondry, among others.

Tradition holds that the only thing we're supposed to watch on New Year's Eve is an assortment of minor celebrities doing their best to entertain us before the ball drops in Times Square -- but as any self-respecting film buff knows, there are any number of movies whose plots revolve in some way around the changing of the calendar year, and quite a few of them are a lot more entertaining than any "New Year's Rockin' Eve." (Sorry, Dick Clark.) For this week's Total Recall, we decided to take a cross-section sampling of New Year's flicks from various genres, touching on some classics and a few surprises along the way. And, unfortunately, though we have a couple of big-ticket items hitting home video shelves this week, the overall selection is once again a little spotty. Many have been waiting for the chance to see the super low-budgeted thriller Paranormal Activity, and now is their chance, as that hits stores today. On top of that, the visually distinctive animated film, 9, also comes out this week, along with the much anticipated (but poorly reviewed) Diablo Cody/Megan Fox movie, Jennifer's Body. Aside from those, we've got a handful of other interesting choices, including a profile of a legendary boxer, one of this season's hottest new TV shows, a wrestler beating up bad guys, and... beer pong? Critics Consensus: Sherlock Holmes Is Worth Investigating

by Tim Ryan on Wednesday, Dec. 23 2009, 04:23 PM comment34 Comments

This week at the movies, we've got a legendary detective (Sherlock Holmes, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law); matriculating rodents (Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, starring David Cross and Jason Lee); a middle aged love triangle (It's Complicated, starring Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin); turbulent business travel (Up in the Air, starring George Clooney and Vera Farmiga); and a directionless director (Nine, starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Penelope Cruz). What do the critics have to say? Known for his hyperkinetic lad pictures, Guy Ritchie may not seem like an obvious choice to direct a Sherlock Holmes adaptation, given that 221B Baker St.'s most famous resident is a paragon of sophistication and stateliness. But a little Robert Downey Jr. goes a long way, critics say, and the star's elementary appeal helps to draw us into this 21st century, action-packed update of the legendary detective.

Total Recall: Jude Law's Best Movies

by Jeff Giles on Tuesday, Dec. 22 2009, 04:15 PM comment60 Comments

Over the course of a filmography spanning 20 years and dozens of movies, Jude Law has become one of the most successful actors of his generation -- in fact, just a few years ago, he made the industry's "top 10 most bankable" list. Ten years ago this Christmas, Law scored one of his earliest high-profile roles with The Talented Mr. Ripley; this weekend, Law caps off a decade in the spotlight with Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes, co-starring with Robert Downey, Jr. (who earned his own Total Recall a few weeks ago -- click here to check it out). To celebrate, we decided to take the opportunity to pay tribute to some of Mr. Law's biggest critical hits. Of course, given his propensity for smaller parts, we had to prune a few entries from the upper reaches of Law's Tomatometer; his roles in films like The Aviator and Lemony Snicket weren't quite substantial enough to make the grade. Still, we think you'll find plenty to love in this week's list. Without further ado... Jude Law's best movies!

Though there are a handful of notable releases, such as District 9, (500) Days of Summer, and It Might Get Loud (all Certified Fresh, by the way), and a couple of nice collections for those familiar with classic American movies and classic American television, there wasn't much in the way of "wow factor" this week. Five Favorite Films With Peter Jackson

by Luke Goodsell on Monday, Dec. 21 2009, 11:33 AM comment72 Comments

Peter Jackson has come a long way since his 1987 debut Bad Taste, a shoestring-budget splatter film shot in his native New Zealand that went on to earn a cult following. Yet there's something of that film's inventive and playful spirit in almost everything he's done since, be it bawdy puppets (1989's Meet the Feebles), killer teens (1994's Heavenly Creatures) or ice-skating apes (2005's King Kong). The Lord of the Rings trilogy made him a household name and earned him Oscar acclaim, while he's currently producing the long-awated prequel, The Hobbit, with Guillermo del Toro directing. As Jackson's latest, the murder-thriller-fantasy The Lovely Bones, arrives in cinemas, we caught up with him and asked him to name his all-time favorite films. He happily obliged. "My five favourite films of all time," Jackson pondered. "For different reasons, they would be... "

This weekend, a dozen years after scoring the biggest blockbuster of all-time, James Cameron returned to his comfortable spot at number one with his most expensive film to date, the sci-fi epic Avatar, which grossed more than every other film in the marketplace combined. On the other hand, Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker failed to charm audiences with their new date movie Did You Hear About the Morgans? which limped into fourth place with a weak opening. A massive blizzard rocked the east coast dumping up to two feet of snow in some areas causing movie theaters to see drastic cuts in attendance.
