Weekly Ketchup: Zombieland 2 in 3D?

Hollywood has mostly taken the week off for Thanksgiving, so that they can all enjoy their vegan turduckens down by the pool, no doubt. Nature abhors a vacuum however (even Hollywood follows MOST of the laws of physics), and so even in a light week there's still news to report, such as franchise news for Zombieland, Kull and The Howling, and casting news for The A-Team, UFO and Thor.

Ban Them All! 10 Infamously Controversial Movies

Death, despair and genital mutilation: only a great Dane could fuse all three into one brilliantly bleak, guaranteed nausea-inducing piece of cinema... which seems to blame all the evil in the world on women, though Lars von Trier begs to differ. Antichrist is definitely out there, but shock and awe in cinema are hardly anything new. Think back to Luis Buñuel's queasy, eyeball-slicing Un Chien Andalou (1929) -- arguably the birth of the movie 'shocker' -- Tod Browning's grotesque Freaks (1933), or any number of early films whose now-tame titilations terrified the censors of the time. Since then, movies have been an ongoing magnet for controversy, from Deep Throat (1972) to The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) to Kids (1995), while some -- such as Cannibal Holocaust (1980) -- resulted in the trial of their directors before the courts. Here, then, are 10 of the most controversial....

Either way, the fandemonium has subsided enough for us to look to the future. It's just seven months until Eclipse, the third instalment of Stephanie Meyer's popular book series, hits the big screen. RT caught up with the cast in LA's Four Seasons hotel during their manic New Moon press tour to get the latest on the eagerly anticipated film. Five Favorite Films With Zombieland Director Ruben Fleischer

by Luke Goodsell on Tuesday, Nov. 24 2009, 09:09 PM comment22 Comments

Filmmaker Ruben Fleischer is having a very good 2009. The former music video director has seen his debut feature, Zombieland, open at number one at the US box office and take in nearly $75 million domestically, while earning an impressive 89% Fresh rating from critics -- not bad for a horror-comedy road movie revolving around the undead. With the film about to open in Australia, we got the chance to catch up with Ruben and ask him his five favorite films. And a fine list it is, too.

Critics Consensus: Flee From Ninja Assassin

by Tim Ryan on Tuesday, Nov. 24 2009, 04:06 PM comment44 Comments

This week at the movies, we've got martial arts mayhem (Ninja Assassin, starring Rain and Naomie Harris); family-friendly hi jinks (Old Dogs, starring John Travolta and Robin Williams); and a post-apocalyptic trek (The Road, starring Viggo Mortensen and Charlize Theron). What do the critics have to say? It seems that the latest collaboration between the Wachowski brothers (The Matrix Trilogy) and James McTeigue (V for Vendetta) is a bit of a dud, and that the Travolta-Williams pairing in Old Dogs fails to work very effectively, despite the pedigree of its stars. It may be left up to The Road to be the most solid choice at the movies this week, but we'll let you decide for yourselves.

RT's Disney Animation Celebration --- A Walk Through The Magic Kingdom!

by RT Staff on Tuesday, Nov. 24 2009, 01:15 PM comment Comment

It's difficult to overstate the influence of Disney's animated feature films on the history of cinema. Not only did Uncle Walt's works transform the concept of family entertainment forever, his company's visionary, exuberant, and sometimes haunting films have left and indelible stamp on moviegoers' consciences. Now, with the release of The Princess and the Frog on the horizon, we at RT thought it would be a good time to rank every single Walt Disney Animation Studios feature film. However, before taking a stroll through this magical kingdom, we'll give some of the "bare necessities" (to quote Baloo) as to how we arrived at an order. We used a weighted formula that takes into account the Tomatometer, number of reviews, and release year of every film included. We excluded all Disney subsidiaries and companies through which Disney has distribution deals hence, no films from Pixar, Studio Ghibli, or DisneyToon Studios are on the list. So get ready to take a trip to never-never land with RT's Disney Animation Countdown! Can you feel the love tonight?

"I Don't Hate Women": Lars von Trier on Antichrist

by Luke Goodsell on Monday, Nov. 23 2009, 08:03 PM comment16 Comments

Danish auteur Lars von Trier is used to controversy following his films; some of his critics have even accused him of courting it for sensationalism and reaction. Yet even with a career that contains the likes of The Idiots (rich kids mocking the handicapped), Dancer in the Dark (which drove star Bjork to never act again) and Dogville (leveled with charges of misogyny and anti-Americanism), the director's latest may be his crowning achievement in outrage. When it debuted at Cannes earlier this year, Antichrist -- starring Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg as a grieving couple who retreat to idyllic woodland where all Hell breaks loose -- was so appalling to some in its graphic, sexual violence that it prompted uproar (and even a special "anti-humanitarian" prize from the jury). But are the critics really getting what von Trier is playing at? And does he even know himself? Moreover, who's got the better talking fox -- he or Wes Anderson?

Total Recall: John Travolta's Best Movies

by Jeff Giles on Monday, Nov. 23 2009, 04:01 PM comment90 Comments

Some actors are lucky enough to make the jump from television to film stardom. Some are lucky enough to get their careers back on track after falling off the A-list. But how many stars have been able to do both -- and walk away virtually unscathed from the flaming wreckage of Battlefield Earth in the bargain? Only John Travolta, ladies and gentlemen. Travolta buddies up with Robin Williams in this weekend's Old Dogs, which inspired us to take a look back at a filmography far more varied than you might remember. Dramas? Comedies? Thrillers? Cartoons? Heck, Travolta's done 'em all -- and he's been doing it for more than 30 years, too. It's high time he got the Total Recall treatment, wouldn't you say?

Critics Consensus: New Moon Wanes

by Tim Ryan on Thursday, Nov. 19 2009, 05:08 PM comment131 Comments

This week at the movies, we've got hot teen vampires (The Twilight Saga: New Moon, starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson); a football family (The Blind Side, starring Sandra Bullock and Quinton Aaron); and some interplanetary mishaps (Planet 51, with voice work by Dwayne Johnson and Jessica Biel). What do the critics have to say? So far, it looks like the latest installment of the Twilight Saga is failing to resonate with the critics, but that didn't stop the first movie from doing gangbusters at the box office, pleasing all of the book's fans in the process. Sandra Bullock hasn't had much luck this year on the Tomatometer, and that doesn't look to change. And lastly, Planet 51 seems as though it doesn't carry much narrative weight behind those flashy visuals. Read the full article for all the details.

Total Recall: Star-Crossed Lovers

by RT Staff on Thursday, Nov. 19 2009, 04:20 PM comment75 Comments

A big part of the cinema's appeal is its ability to take us places we've never been -- but to really work, that escapism has to be grounded to universal themes, and like the Good Book says, the greatest of these is love. As any Twilight fan could tell you, nothing ratchets up the drama like star-crossed love, and to celebrate the imminent release of the franchise's second installment, New Moon, we've put together a list of some of Hollywood's most noteworthy -- and most persistent -- couples. We couldn't cover them all, of course, but if you've ever shed tears for the injustice of an onscreen love unfairly denied, you're sure to swoon over this week's Total Recall!
