A show that includes crude lines about dad passing gas and pulling out his junk and has 10-year-olds saying things adults hope is too advanced for their age ends up being sweet but still strikes out as a comedy.

While Game's casting and writing is solid, the premise might not be unique enough to score a sizeable audience.

Back in the Game is more than a bit rough around the edges; it has some serious flaws, including Caan's apparent desire to scenery-chew his way through every on-screen moment.

There's no denying that Back in the Game is heavy on charm, and feels very at home on the Disney-owned ABC.

We'd all prefer originality, but in this case, at least, what's been borrowed is less important than what the show has made of it.

It's not bad to the point of being offensive, but it is insulting in its flagrant mediocrity.

However many points you dock it for lack of originality, you've got to give back double for ferociously funny execution.

Nothing groundbreaking, but every so often a sports-themed show is de rigueur.

Caan's perfectly clipped delivery and his daughter's well-timed comebacks make Back in the Game at least a standup double if not a sliding triple.

Familiarity isn't always a bad thing for this sort of show, and should all else fail, it could join the Friday night farm team of Neighbors (which aired in this time period last fall) and Last Man Standing.

I'm not saying every comedy needs to reinvent the wheel but the treads are too worn on this one.

Little League isn't the most common of sitcom subjects, but Back In The Game still mines from a bunch of established tropes.

I could watch Lawson do just about anything for a half-hour each week. Plus Caan as a beer-drinking, cantankerous coach and grandfather has a lot of appeal.

It could retreat into family fuzziness or it could dive deeper into the suburban weirdness suggested by its supporting characters.... I've got my foam finger out rooting for the latter.

Producers persist with this fixation on adult children who fall on hard times and move back in [with their parents]; it's both the worst and funniest premise...sitcom writers can conceive. So far, it's worked mainly as an indicator of quick cancellation.
