This year's installment of the British period drama draws to a close with a 90-minute finale that, like much of the season, is a yawner.

This season's repetitive tropes, recycled conflicts and predictable heartbreak are not worth the trouble this time around. I watched it, so you don't have to.

In all of this Downton seems such a conventional and predictable series, despite its setting and occasionally sparkling dialogue.

When you think about what Downton Abbey has achieved, and is continuing to pull off, it's actually pretty remarkable.

January 8, 2014 Full Review Source: NPR

Despite the occasional creakiness and lapses into melodrama Downton Abbey remains a show to watch, notable for its dreamy production values and the real depth of feeling it portrays between the classes.

The second episode is a cracker, with a couple of shocking twists and it gets even juicier in episode three.

Not all of the storylines work - an affair between a black entertainer and the carefree Rose seems forced - but the action moves so fast that you'll be hooked on a new scandal/crisis/romance in mere minutes.

The inhabitants of Downton, at their core, remain almost exactly as first written. Some of the characters were initially conceived with complexity.

The cast is so uniformly good, frankly, it's tempting not to single anyone out, and Fellowes continues to juggle the dizzying assortment of plots with what appears to be effortless ease.

Downton Abbey is one of those shows that is shielded from criticisms of predictability because predictability (read as reliability) is its hallmark, with occasional shockers thrown in to snap you out of your biscuit coma.

Downton is on much firmer and more satisfying ground when charting the new romantic possibilities for Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) or spinning sentimental morality tales among the colorful servants below stairs.

It's difficult to believe that the tone of Downton Abbey feels heavier than it did when the Abbey was being used as a recuperation center for officers during the war, but there aren't as many comical moments as I would expect.

The show's plummy, self-satisfied conservatism has been pointed out many times before. But that won't stop me from rooting for Mary, the newly-hatched Downton executive.
