The characters still interact in ways that feel true, but the comedy is now sharp enough to entertain viewers who don't happen to be affluent twentysomething white women.

By rejigging a few things and pushing some others to the forefront, the third season of Girls might actually be a stronger outing than the little-loved season two.

There's... a chance that Girls, like Hannah, has found its voice and that it doesn't speak for "a generation" or anything quite so presumptuous, that it merely speaks for itself. Still, I hope it's still occasionally plucky enough to try.

Girls is no longer shocking just for the sake of shocking. Even a bit grown up, maybe.

In the first few episodes of this season, Girls does a much better job of finding the balance between humor and drama that has eluded it in previous seasons.

The season 3 premiere of Girls shows us the show hasn't forgotten its funny bone, and it certainly hasn't forgotten its heart.

Although their moves might be forehead-slapping... that gritty take on friendship in the Internet age has been the heart of Girls since its inception.

I love the straight up honesty that is flowing between the characters this year.

It's not necessarily admirable, but Girls and Lena Dunham have decided that there's more fascination-and more comedy-in having its characters be messed up than in having them be likeable.

Girls remains extremely self-aware.

January 13, 2014 Full Review Source: HitFix

Girls is well aware of the conundrum Hannah and Adam and other characters are trapped in - we're all trapped in it, to some degree - and it has sense enough to let us figure this, and a lot of other things, out for ourselves.

Girls is as refreshing and audacious as ever and one of the few half-hour dramedies where you can feel its heart pounding and see its belly ripple with laughter.

We are talking too much about a show that is only about the hollowness of empty, despicable people.

Three seasons in, Dunham and her team are better at doing what they've been trying to do all along: create a string of lovely character vignettes, with a deliberate disinterest in plot and a fascination with a certain zeitgeist.

In Season 3, [the characters] solipsism and callousness are even more pointed, all the more shocking, and still quite funny.

It's not Rainbow Brite and ponies, but it's as if Dunham hit her creative reset button, fixed her hair, and started looking at how these characters would begin to mature - with the exception of Shoshanna, who remains a chatty accessory to it all.

It's to Dunham's credit that the show doesn't always need to be funny. At a certain point, we just want to see the girls, at last, grow up.

Girls has come a long way: It's the sharpest show out there about the self-justifications of the self-obsessed and the immense power even of decaying friendships. That's the price Girls paid for beating the haters at their own game: It learned to hate.

January 9, 2014 Full Review Source: Slate

Like Hannah herself, it no longer feels like it's trying quite so hard to experience edgy things just for the sake of material, so that both its shocks and its missteps come across as earned.

What it clearly isn't doing, based on season three's opening salvo, is progressing much - yielding interesting moments, but also a sense of monotony.
