A hard days night

It's a grueling and eventful first 48 hours for the new crop of surgical interns at Seattle Grace Hospital in the debut episode of Grey's Anatomy. Among the newcomers are Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), still struggling to emerge from the shadow of her celebrated surgeon mother Ellis Grey (Kate Burton); fiercely competitive Stanford grad Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), who will in time become Meredith's best friend; former fashion model Isobel "Izzie" Stevens (Katherine Heigl), a bit put off that she's no longer the sole center of attention; amiable, na´ve George O'Malley (T.R. Knight); and Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), who wastes no time proving himself to be a pompous jerk. After a pep talk from chief surgeon Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.), the interns are placed in the not-so-tender care of supervising doctor Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), also known as "The Nazi" for reasons that become instantly obvious. During their two-day shakedown cruise, the rookies come face to face with the harsh realities of hospital life, with Meredith tending to a girl suffering from seizures, George enduring his first appendectomy, and Cristina finds that it's no picnic workiing under veteran surgeon Preston Burke (Isaiah Washington). But the biggest shock of all is reserved for Ellis, when she discovers that her handsome "one-night stand" from the previous evening happens to be her new boss, Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey)! Peter Horton received an Emmy nomination for his direction of this inaugural episode.

The First Cut Is the Deepest

After considering several candidates, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) decides who will be her roommates during her first-year internship. Back on the job, she butts heads with a pediatric intern to save the life of a newborn child, and also claims temporary possession of a gruesome "souvenir" left behind by the man who raped her patient Allison (Alex Thayer). Meanwhile, Cristina (Sandra Oh) and Alex (Justin Chambers) get their act together, so to speak; George (T.R. Knight) spends a few disheartening hours with the Seattle Grace code team; and Izzie (Katherine Heigl) copes with a patient who speaks no English. In other developments, Burke (Isaiah Washington) finds out why Derek (Patrick Dempsey) may be chosen as chief of surgery over hm; and Webber (James Pickens Jr.) remains close-mouthed over how well he knew Meredith's mom.

Winning a Battle, Losing the War

It's the annual Dead Baby Bike Day, in which the bicycle messengers of Seattle participate in a city-wide race. Unfortunately, there's been a spectacular accident, and the ER is filled to overflowing with injured cyclists and pedestrians. Among the casualties is a biker named Viper (Callum Blue), who has spokes protruding from his abdomen--not that this prevents him from hitting on Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), who has enough trouble on her hands fending off Derek (Patrick Dempsey). On a more somber note, anothere of the victims is an unidentified, brain-dead woman, whose organs may end up being harvested for a gay cancer patient (Keith David. It is up to Izzie (Katherine Heigl) to decide whether or not to remove the comatose woman's liver...and, more problematically, to determine how long to wait before doing so.

No Man's Land

Despite a grim prognosis, Cristina (Sandra Oh) stubbornly insists upon giving extra-special treatment to cancer patient Liz Fallon (Anna Maria Horsford), who happens to have been the longtime scrub nurse for Meredith's surgeon mother Ellis Grey (Kate Burton). In other developments, a constructor worker is brought to the hospital after shooting six nails in his head, a feat that turns out to be something far more than an on-the-job accident; and George (T.R. Knight) rebels at being treated as "one of the girls" by roomies Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Izzie (Katherine Heigl). The episode's high point occurs when Alex (Justin Chambers) comes across a sexy lingerie ad featuring Izzie, which he then pastes all over the interns' locker room--leading to an extremely revealing moment!

Shake Your Groove Thing

During her first heart surgery, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) makes what she regards as a serious error, but is afraid to say anything for fear of losing her internship. Meanwhle, George (T.R. Knight) is saddled with a cranky emphysema victim (Kathryn Joosten) who insists that she has stopped smoking--but the X-rays tell a different story; and Alex (Justin Chambers) deals with a patient who is addicted to prescription pain killers, and will go to any lengths to keep the supply flowing. Finally, a middle-aged man (Jeff Doucette) with obstructed bowels may prove to be equally obstructive to Izzie (Katherine Heigl), who must take time off from planning a lavish party for her boyfriend Hank (Jonathan Scarfe).

Air date: May 1, 2005

If Tomorrow Never Comes

The interns are dumbstruck by patient Annie Connors (Alex S. Alexander), who checks in with a 65-pound tumor--an all-time record for Seattle Grace. Another patient, Mr. Levangie (Bruce Weitz), suffers from Parkinson's disease, the proper treatment of which sparks a war of words between surgical intern Izzie (Katherine Heigl) and her gimlet-eyed supervisor Bailey (Chandra Wilson). Elsewhere, Bailey warns Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) that her relationship (such as it is) with Derek (Patrick Dempsey) may cost both of them their jobs; and Izzie offers advice to George (T.R. Knight) as he nervously prepares to ask Meredith out himself.

Air date: May 8, 2005

The Self Destruct Button

It's a toss-up as to who is more disgusted by the news that Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) has slept with Derek (Patrick Dempsey): Meredith's roomies Izzie (Katherine Heigl) and George (T.R. Knight), or the interns' granite-faced supervisor Bailey (Chandra Wilson). Back at Seattle Grace, Derek picks George to assist him during an extremely delicate brain operation, but George may lose the opportunity if he speaks up about the drinking problem of veteran anestheseologist Dr. Taylor. Elsewhere, Izzie performs emergency surgery on a disgruntled gent who has swallowed his girlfriend's car keys; Alex (Justin Chambers) meets a fellow former wrestler named Owens (Russell Hornsby), who has developed a morbid fascination with self-mutilation; and several of the interns become involved in the plight of a teenager who is suffering the aftereffects of a botched gastric bypass operation.

Save Me

Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) argue bitterly over their treatment of a paralyzed mountain climber, but that's not the real problem between them. Meanwhile, Izzie (Katherine Heigl) becomes convinced that her patient Duff (Kevin Rahm) develops psychic powers during his seizures; George (T.R. Knight) has difficulty intubating a patient while his peers are watching; and Orthodox Jewish teenager Devo(Sarah Hagan) refuses to allow Alex (Justin Chambers) to insert a life-saving pig valve in her ailing heart. As for Cristina (Sandra Oh), her plans to abort her unborn baby are altered after she becomes acquainted with Zoey (Joan McMurtrey), a middle-aged, pregnant cancer victim.

Who's Zoomin' Who?

Worried about his failing eyesight, Webber (James Pickens Jr.) confides his fears to Derek (Patrick Dempsey), who makes a startling suggestion. After a night of passion with one of the nurses, George (T.R. Knight) becomes the latest victim of a sexually transmitted disease that has inflicted several other members of the hospital staff. Burke (Isaiah Washington) discovers that his best friend Bill (Wayne Wilderson) is a patient at Seattle Grace, a fact that casts unpleasant aspersions upon Bill's wife. And Izzie (Katherine Heigl) and Cristina (Sandra Oh) are caught in the crossfire as the family of an alcoholic bickers over the man's medical treatment. But the big "money scene" in this final episode of Grey's Anatomy's first season occurs at the very end, when Meredith (Ellen Pompeo). discovers to her chagrin that she is definitely NOT the only woman is Derek's life.

Soap opera. As the scene of all these interpersonal fireworks is a hospital, patients do share the screen. But they're wheeled in as excuses to get the leads into the OR or as metaphors for something Meredith and her newbie cohorts need to learn.

I am at least convinced that nerve-racked Meredith and her buddy band of handsome cutups have a higher calling than liposuction, insurance fraud, grandstanding, and golf.

I want to see bags under the eyes; I want to see yellow teeth from drinking too much soda on call; I want to see a unibrow on somebody. Still, I think it's a great show. I'm totally hooked.

The script by Shonda Rhimes, nimbly directed by Peter Horton, is nothing but a casserole made of equal parts ham and corn.
