Time Has Come Today

As Season Three of Grey's Anatomy gets under way, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) has only a few fleeting moments to ponder her romantic rendezvous with Derek (Patrick Dempsey) at the end of Season Two before Derek and George (T.R. Knight) are quarantined in the same room by a flu epidemic. In another unresolved issue from the previous season, Izzie (Katherine Heigl) is so devastated by the death of heart patient Denny Duquette that she decides to give up her medical career completely. Elsewhere, the wife (Loretta Devine) of surgery chief Webber (James Pickens Jr.) forces him to choose between the hospital and her; and two of the surgeons look after an infant found in a most unexpected place. This episode is highlighted by an extensive flashback to that wonderful night in 2005 just before the series' regulars began their "tour of duty" at Seattle Grace Hospital.

Air date: Sep 28, 2006

I Am a Tree

Surprisingly, it is Bailey (Chandra Wilson) who is the loudest voice as the staffers try to persuade Izzie (Katherine Heigl) not to give up medicine. Meanwhile, Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) scores again, and Addison (Kate Walsh) is once more the prize; Cristina (Sandra Oh) has an uncomfortable meeting with the parents (Richard Roundtree, Diahann Carroll) of the convalescing Burke (Isaiah Washington); Meredith remains torn between Derek (Patrick Dempsey) and Finn (Chris O'Donnell); and Webber (James Pickens Jr.) confronts Callie (Sara Ramirez) over her quirky behavior, just as George (T.R. Knight) walks in. And on the "patient roster" front, a lung cancer victim (Roxanne Hart) decides to throw caution to the winds, with wide-ranging results.

Air date: Oct 5, 2006

Sometimes a Fantasy

Cristina (Sandra Oh) agrees to keep secret the fact that Burke (Isaiah Washington) has been suffering from hand tremors since his surgery. Izzie (Katherine Heigl) pays a visit to the hospital for the first time since she walked out. Alex (Justin Chambers) is perplexed by his latest patient, a foster child named Megan (Abigail Breslin) who seems unfazed by her many injuries. Another patient's wife (Lanai Chapman) vents her wrath at her husband (Gabriel Casseus) over his repeated surgeries. Addison has a tense, terse meeting with Mark (Eric Dane). And George (T.R. Knight) insists that Callie (Sara Ramirez) find somewhere else to live (guess where!)

Air date: Oct 12, 2006

What I Am

Addison (Kate Walsh) is not happy when Sloan (Eric Dane) joins the staff, and in consequence suffers a severe attack of self-doubt just when her patient, a pregnant woman (Tina Holmes), needs her most. Cristina (Sandra Oh) wants Burke (Isaiah Washington) to continue his rehab, but he is anxious to prove that he's a capable a surgeon as ever, hand tremors or no hand tremors. Still unsettled in matters of the heart, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) is ill-prepared for a medical emergency. And Izzie (Katherine Heigl) receives an astonishing "reward" from the father (Fred Ward) of the late Denny Duquette. Weaving through all this intrigue is the story of ailing car salesman Shawn Sullivan (Alan Blumenfield).

Air date: Oct 19, 2006

Oh, The Guilt

Dr. Bailey (Chandra Wilson) again shows her (usually well-concealed!) tender side as she counsels a young breast-cancer victim (Justina Machado) suffering from depression. Later on, Bailey receives some strong moral support as she stands before an M&M board, defending herself from charges that she was responsible for the death of Denny Duquette. Elsewhere, It is revealed that the talented Dr. Sloan (Eric Dane) has not only been dallying with Addison (Kate Walsh), but also with Callie (Sara Ramirez); Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) decides to call it quits with Finn, and later teams with Addison to separate a divorced couple (Arye Gross, Faith Prince) who have become embarrassingly "stuck on each other"; and Izzie (Katherine Heigl) is still recovering from the news that Denny has left her $8.7 million.

Air date: Nov 2, 2006

Let The Angels Commit

Derek's sister Nancy (Embeth Davidtz) pays a visit for the express purpose of giving him Hell about the "slutty" Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), all the while blissfully ignorant of Addison's infidelity. Cristina (Sandra Oh) inspires envy when she helps perform a rare cardiac autotransplantation (aka the Humpty Dumpty procedure), but her actions just before surgery serve only to arouse suspicions about Burke (Isaiah Washington). Addison (Kate Walsh) and George's (T.R. Knight) pregnant patient Noelle (Liza Lapira) is in a strange predicament: she has two uteruses, and one of her babies is growing faster than the other, indicating that she's been unfaithful to at least one of the fathers. And finally, Alex (Katherine Heigl) toys with the idea of retiring as a doctor and using her multi-million-dollar inheritance to start another business.

Air date: Nov 9, 2006

Where the Boys Are

The male staffers at Seattle Grace go on a camping trip in the mountains, which culminates in a "slap fight" (so to speak) between George (T.R. Knight) and Alex (Justin Chambers). Addison (Kate Walsh) and Callie (Sara Ramirez) have a lot to talk over as they team up on a medical case. Bailey (Chandra Wilson) tears into Cristina (Sandra Oh) concerning her strange actions vis-ŕ-vis Burke (Isaiah Washington). And Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) enters unchartered territory (for her) as she assists Sloan (Eric Dane) with a very delicate "corrective" procedure (Hint: the patient is named Donna, but she used to be Daniel). This episode earned a special award from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

Air date: Nov 16, 2006

Staring at the Sun

George (T.R. Knight) has trouble explaining to his somewhat thick-eared siblings that their father Harold (George Dzundza) must have heart surgery. When Burke (Isaiah Washington) is chosen to perform the operation, he wonders if he's up to it--and so, after a while, is George. Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) is profoundly affected by her young patient Mia (Brooke Bryan), who seems to prefer her allegedly abusive nanny to her mother. After calling a truce with Addison (Kate Walsh), Derek (Patrick Dempsey) shares a few words (and a bath!) with Meredith. And two other couples face an uphill climb in search of common ground.

Air date: Nov 23, 2006

From A Whisper to a Scream

The ER is kept hopping by a spectacular traffic accident, which the wife of the driver blames on an "insane" car. Meanwhile, the burden of keeping Burke's hand tremors a secret is taking its toll on Cristina (Sandra Oh). Also, despite being on probation, Izzie (Katherine Heigl) cannot help but meddle in the matter of George's heart-patient father. And as for George (T.R. Knight), he has gotten on Burke's bad side by calling in Dr. Erica Hahn (Brooke Smith) as surgical consultant--the same Erica Hahn who made life miserable for Burke in med school, and who seems poised to do the same all over again at Seattle Grace.

Air date: Nov 30, 2006

Don't Stand So Close to Me

Things become more strained than usual between Burke (Isaiah Washington), who has been offered the position of chief surgeon, and Cristina (Sandra Oh), who is still keeping Burke's tremors a secret. Elsewhere, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) must bite her tongue to keep several secrets from her half-sister Molly (Mandy Siegfried), who has been admitted as a patient. George (T.R. Knight) senses his father's vulnerability for the first time when the elder O'Malley (George Dzundza) undergoes surgery. And Mark (Eric Dane) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) must cope with conjoined twins (Jason Sklar, Randy Sklar) who refuse to be separated despite the consequences of not doing so.

Air date: Jan 11, 2007

Six Days (1)

In the first half of a two-part story, no sooner has George's father Harold O'Malley (Geoge Dzundza) nemerged from heart surgery than he must undergo another operation for cancer. Both Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) suffer mightily when Meredith's estranged father Thatcher Grey (Jeff Perry) arrives in town to visit his other daughter Molly and his new granddaughter. While still putting off cashing her huge inheritance check from Denny, Izzie (Katherine Heigl) bonds with Heather, a teenager with a bad attitude, a worse case of spinal curvature, and no money for additional surgery. And the relationship between Cristina (Sandra Oh) and Burke (Isaiah Washington) reaches a whole new plateau.

Air date: Jan 18, 2007

Six Days (2)

In the conclusion of a two-part story, things are sunny indeed (at least temporarily)for Cristina (Sandra Oh) and Burke (Isaiah Washington), but things don't look so good for George's cancer-patient father (George Dzundza); even so, this medical crisis serves to bring George and Callie closer together. Elsewhere, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) has harsh words for Derek (Patrick Dempsey) and even harsher ones for her estranged father Thatcher Grey (Jeff Perry). Bailey (Chandra Wilson) is none too thrilled when she is forced to keep a secret. And the money for Heather's operation is provided by an anonymous source (Hint: which of the series' characters has just come into a multimillion-dollar inheritance?)

Air date: Jan 25, 2007

Great Expectations

Bailey (Chandra Wilson) announces plans to start a free clinic, and Izzie (Katherine Heigl) has the money to make this dream come true--provided that the clinic is named after the late Denny Duquette. Meanwhile, Cristina (Ellen Pompeo) receives a marriage proposal; George (T.R. Knight) expresses his grief over his father's death in a truly unique fashion, much to the delight of Callie (Sara Ramirez); and Addison (Kate Walsh) and Alex (Justin Chambers) take great pains to avoid each other. Also, the surgeons become emotionally involved in the plight of Jillian Miller (Jessica Stroup), a young Amish cancer patient torn between her strict parents and her "shunned" best friend (Rachel Boston).

Air date: Feb 1, 2007

Wishin' and Hopin'

Miraculousy, Meredith's mom Ellis (Kate Burton) becomes lucid for the first time since being stricken with Alzheimers'. Unfortunately, Ellis' first words are not entirely flattering to Meredith (Ellen Pompeo)--in fact, they're downright abusive. Meanwhile, a patient's toxic blood may prove dangerous to three of the surgeons; Izzy (Katherine Heigl) has quite a conversation with the first client at the Denny Duquette memorial clinic; Cristina (Sandra Oh) gives serious consideration to Burke's proposal; and the eminent retirement of Dr. Webber (James Pickens Jr.) results in "competition fever". The episode ends as George (T.R. Knight) and Callie (Sara Ramirez) return from Vegas with a big surprise--as if we couldn't have guessed the nature of that surprise from what took place in the previous episode!

Air date: Feb 8, 2007

Walk On Water

In the first episode of a three-part story arc, the staff at Seattle Grace swings into action when disaster strikes on Coleman Dock. A cargo ship has plowed into a ferryboat, killing several people and seriously injuring many more. Some of the survivors are in such bad shape that Dr. Webber (James Pickens Jr.) must literary play God, deciding on the spot who can be saved and who can't. Cristina (Sandra Oh) takes special interest in a grotesquely disfigured and very pregnant "Jane Doe" (Elizabeth Reaser), while Alex (Justin Chambers) must keep his arrogance in check as he deals with the victims' anguished relatives. The situations worsens when, while providing aid and comfort to an eerily calm child victim (Madison Leisle), Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) loses her footing and falls in the water--and she can't swim!

Air date: Feb 15, 2007

Drowning on Dry Land

In the second episode of a three-part story arc, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) has fallen in the water at the scene of a horrendous ferryboat disaster, and is still among the missing. Izzie (Katherine Heigl) takes medical instructions by phone as she performs emergency cranial surgery on a victim trapped between two cars. George (T.R Knight) tells a mother that her son has been found safe so she would agree to undergo surgery--and now must conduct a frantic search for the boy. And while trying to mollify the victims' families, Alex forms an unusual bond with an unidentified pregnant woman (Elizabeth Reaser) who has sustained mulitple injuries. With all this going on, Cristina and Burke still find time to announce their upcoming wedding--only to start quarrelling the moment the words are out of their mouths.

Air date: Feb 22, 2007

Some Kind of Miracle

In the conclusion of a three-part story arc, the Seattle Grace staffers race against time to save Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), who after nearly drowning at the site of the ferryboat tragedy has been rushed to the hospital showing no signs of life. As she hovers between this world and the next, Meredith undergoes a spectacular near-death experience, "starring" several of her late friends and acquaintances--ranging from bomb-squad detective Dylan Young (Kyle Chandler) to her dear departed dog Doc! Meanwhile, the bond between Alex (Justin Chambers) and the seriously injured "Jane Doe" (Elizabeth Reaser) grows stronger; Izzie (Katherine Heigl) has serious issues with both Callie (Sara Ramirez) and George (T.R. Knight); Cristina (Sandra Oh) has yet another meltdown; and a major recurring character bids a sort-of-fond farewell.

Air date: Mar 15, 2007

Scars and Souvenirs

Recovering from her near-death experience, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) is convinced that her outlook on life has completely changed. More and more candidates are vying for the chief-of-surgery position soon to be vacated by Webber (James Pickens Jr.), among them handsome doctor Colin Marlow (Roger Rees), whose arrival has a strange effect on Cristina (Sandra Oh). Derek (Patrick Dempsey) finds himself treating an old friend (Shohreh Aghashloo) whose tumor may well be inoperable. Still trying to cope with the loss of Denny Duquette, Izzie (Katherine Heigl) is profoundly moved by WW2 vet Scofield (James Gammon),who has come to Seattle Grace to remove a bullet that has been lodged in his body for over sixty years. And Alex (Justin Chambers) prepares the first of several operations on the severely injured "Jane Doe" (Elizabeth Reaser). This is the episode in which George (T.R. Knight) begins questioning the wisdom of his marriage to Callie--culminating in a drunken misadventure with another female staffer!

Air date: Mar 22, 2007

My Favorite Mistake

Suffering from the mother of all hangovers, George (T.R. Knight) is in no shape to meet his new father-in-law (Hector Elizondo)--especially after spending the night with a woman other than his wife. Alex (Justin Chambers) helps Jane Doe (Elizabeth Reaser) select her "new look" after she completes her surgery. Izzie finds out about Meredith's (Ellen Pompeo) drinking problem, all the while keeping mum about a secret of her own. And the arrival of Cristina's (Sandra Oh) former lover Colin Marlow (Roger Rees) seriously compromises her relationship with Burke (Isaiah Washington).

Air date: Apr 19, 2007

Time after time

The revelation that Izzie (Katherine Heigl) once gave up a daughter for adoption is a challenge which George (T. R. Knight) is willing to face, or so he thinks. Down in the dumps over her vacillating relationship with Derek (Patrick Dempsey), Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) must also contend with her stepmother Susan (Mare Willingham). Cristina (Sandra Oh) and Burke (Isaiah Washington) have trouble summoning enthusiasm over their impending marriage as long as Colin (Roger Rees) remains on the scene. Alex (Justin Chambers) is convinced that he has found the family of the beleagured "Jane Doe" (Elizabeth Reaser). And in a lighter moment, Dr. Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) teaches an old dog--namely Dr. Webber (James Pickens Jr.)--a few new tricks.

Air date: Apr 26, 2007

As the interns prepare for the all-important First Year exam, the candidates for the position of surgical chief fall over themselves providing "TLC" to a "VIP" patient. Sloan (Eric Dane) anxiously counts the seconds until the end of his 60-day vow of chastity. Cristina (Sandra Oh) gets sore when Burke (Isaiah Washington) monopolizes their wedding plans. The relationship between Addison (Kate Walsh) and Alex (Justin Chambers) heats up, even as Alex grows ever closer to "Jane Doe" (Elizabeth Reaser)--or is her real name Ava? And a male patient is brought in with a fish stuffed in his. . .well, never mind, but it hurts REAL bad. This episode marks the reteaming, as it were, of former X-Files regulars James Pickens Jr. and Mitch Pileggi.

Air date: May 3, 2007

The Other Side of This Life (Part 1)

In the first episode of a two-part story, Addison (Kate Walsh) heads to LA for a reunion old medical-school friends, blissfully unprepared for what it is in store for her. Meredith's stepmom Susan (Mare Winningham) is brought in with a truly bad case of hiccups, just as Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) thinks she has come to terms with their relationship. "Jane Doe" (Elizabeth Reaser) has been identified as "Ava", and Alex (Justin Chambers) is happy with her by any name. And Cristina (Sandra Oh) prepares for her wedding with the dubious input of her own mother (Tsai Chin) and Burke's mom (Diahann Carroll). This episode serves to introduce the future costars of the Grey's Anatomy spinoff Private Practice: Tim Daly (Pete), Amy Brennerman (Violet), Taye Diggs (Sam), Chris Lowell (Dell) and Paul Adelstein (Cooper) (the character of Naomi, here played by Merrin Dungey, would be taken over by Audra McDonald in Private Practice).

Air date: May 3, 2007

The Other Side of This Life (Part 2)

In the conclusion of a two-part story, Addison (Kate Walsh) undergoes a profound personal crisis as she mulls over the possibility of moving to LA's Oceanside Wellness Center (thereby setting the stage for the Grey's Anatomy spinoff Private Practice). Back in Seattle, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) learns that her stepmother Susan (Mare Winningham) is suffering from something far more serious than a bad case of hiccups. Alex (Justin Chambers) shows up for emotional support as Derek (Patrick Dempsey) performs emergency surgery on Ava (Elizabeth Reaser). And Burke (Isaiah Washington) and George (T.R. Knight) get quite an earful when they turn to Bailey (Chandra Wilson) for marital advice.

Air date: May 10, 2007

Testing 1-2-3

All but one of the interns are fully prepared to take the first-year exams. Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and her father have finally come to an understanding, which is more than can be said for Meredith and Derek (Patrick Dempsey). Burke (Isaiah Washington) and Cristina (Sandra Oh) are just a few hours away from becoming husband and wife. Callie (Sara Ramirez) is beginning to figure out what went on between George (T.R. Knight) and Izzie (Katherine Heigl) on that drunken evening. Ava (Elizabeth Reaser) finally regains her memory and identifies herself as "Rebecca Pope"--but this is anything but good news for Alex (Justin Chambers). And in addition to three injured mountain climbers, the hospital admissions room includes such familiar faces as Adele Webber (Loretta Devine) and Joe the Bartender (Steven W. Bailey).

Air date: May 17, 2007

Didn't We Almost Have It All?

The results of the first-year exams are posted, and all but one the interns have passed. Cristina (Sandra Oh) and Burke (Isaiah Washington) are ready to march down the aisle and exchange vows--or are they? An important decision reached by George (T.R. Knight) and Callie (Sara Ramirez) is clouded by thoughts of Izzie (Katherine Heigl). Alex (Justin Chambers) has trouble hiding his feelings when the husband of Rebecca Pope--aka Ava, aka Jane Doe--shows up. It's anybody's guess where things stand for Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) And as his wife (Loretta Devine) undergoes surgery, Dr. Webber (James Pickens Jr.) announces the name of his successor. This cliffhanger finale of Grey's Anatomy's third season marks the final series appearance of Kate Walsh (Addison), who will headline the spinoff series Private Practice.

Grey's Anatomy definitely lost points in credibility for me.

If you stop watching the season right before the first episode in the three-part block involving the ferry crash, it's a pretty decent season.

The very best thing about Grey's Anatomy is that its strongest characters are women. Unfortunately, none of them is Meredith Grey.

September 11, 2013 Full Review Source: PopMatters

In the end, as we watch these 25 episodes (although I'd certainly counsel anyone to skip the colossally awful episodes 22 and 23 ...), we come to the realization that this just might be the most significant television program of our day.

Grey's Anatomy will offer up a charming, enjoyable diversion even if it stays on its current repetitive course and rides that pony into the sunset.

Grey's Anatomy is certainly one of those guilty pleasures that many may not admit to.
