Though it sports rich visuals, Reign doesn't quite fulfill its potential as an entertainingly cheesy soap, nor does it have the chops to sufficiently serve the teen drama crowd.

Reign has perfected a tone that hovers between "taking itself seriously" and "taking nothing seriously." It's an instinctive and confident show.

Maybe it isn't as gritty as Game of Thrones, or as truthful as a History Channel documentary, but Reign is entertaining and we'll take that over accurate any day.

Welcome to Sexual Servitude and the City...if the city were a castle, and there were a cult in the woods that practiced human sacrifice, and there were an alleged ghost that communicated via marbles. Also: sexy Nostradamus!

The CW series does a fairly effortless-looking job of combining a 16th-century setting with a fluid, modern dynamic.

October 25, 2013 Full Review Source: TheWrap

It does have one thing strong going for it: star Adelaide Kane is regal as well as a looker and she seems to carry the series right over the silly spots.

I have no problem with naive teenage love, mean girls and treachery, and the magical elements thrown in were also not unwelcome. That's where I believe the show will find it's strength.

Reign is nothing more than a lackluster attempt to capitalize on the historical drama genre.

We Got This Covered

CW's from-a-distance-daring embrace of the period piece quickly defines itself as a silly soap, albeit one where the bodice-ripping we've come to associate with the genre on pay cable, while artfully done, is perhaps here closer to bodice-wrinkling.

The drama wasn't compelling enough to get me to forget the costumes - and that is the more serious fault of this one.

Even though many will find this brand of overripe melodrama as silly as the indelible "Death of Mary Queen of Scots" sketch from Monty Python's Flying Circus, I can't help but root a little for such a zany risk

Production values and historical accuracy aside: does it scratch an itch? Indeed it does; it makes being a Renaissance princess look as appealing as being a princess of the Upper East Side. God save the queen (for the rest of the season, at least).

Reign is a frothy, CW-style history lesson - which means you should sit back, admire the headbands (so many! so pretty!) and the eye candy (ditto!) and not worry too much about accuracy

Reign may just become the newest guilty pleasure to the masses, and the new nightmare to all parents watch groups.

October 17, 2013 Full Review Source: The Loop

If you think of Reign as Mary, Teen of Scots - a sort of Gossip Girl where the consequence of wearing the wrong outfit is not exclusion from the cool cafeteria table but beheading - it can be surprisingly entertaining.

What thankfully saves Reign from being mired in the realm of inconsequential teenage angst is the fact that the stakes are way higher than a broken heart, the consequences more unsettling.

It's hard to know where to begin describing the many ways in which Reign falls flat in its attempt to sex up history for its demo, which deserves better than this.

It's the stuff of fairytales, with politics and prophesies mixed in to decrease the possibility of a happily-ever-after for certain characters. But at its core, this is a soapy teen drama.
