The third season picks up with the dust settling from the recent merger, but all is not well at the new firm of Pearson Darby. Harvey (Gabriel Macht), still smarting from Jessica's (Gina Torres) refusal to make him partner, launches a plan with Darby (guest star Conleth Hill) to take her down. Their pact involves Harvey representing oil executive Ava Hessington (Michelle Fairley), who's accused of bribery, and taking on his nemesis Cameron Dennis (guest star Gary Cole). Mike (Patrick J. Nothing in the first two new episodes quite matches the tension of the summer run.
The characters, many of who were funny and occasionally unpredictable, have been flattened out through the relentless imposition of trite dialogue.
Suits is more than a pose. There are no dumb or weak characters, just smart sharks.
What inspires more head-scratching is how Suits has coasted to a third season with such hackneyed writing.
There really isn't anything new under the sun, as last season's "Rewind" taught us. The mentee always wants to become the mentor, and the assumption of that role always comes at a very steep and potentially life-changing cost.
Suits has more internal forward momentum than most anything else on television right now, and when it's on, like it mostly is here, it just cooks.
