Would it have been so hard to make the present day just the slightest bit interesting -- or, at the very least, worth saving?

The kiddies will want to check out the dinosaurs, but children will probably wander off pretty quickly when they see how rarely their ancient reptilian friends are on screen.

If you can make it past the exposition, and the earnest family cliches - a rebellious teenage son, an awkward brainiac daughter - there's plenty of satisfying dino action. And it all looks gorgeous.

Terra Nova's' expansive vistas and action scenes look spiffy, and if you like to see humans battle dinosaurs in HD, you're likely to be satisfied by the workmanlike but effective story told in the pilot.

Cool visuals, some effective action set pieces and the expected strong supporting performance by Stephen Lang.

Between dinosaur escapades, time travel and the obligatory exposition of a mind-bender of a story, Terra Nova packed quite a bit into its two-hour premiere.

Easily the most exciting show of the fall season, Fox's Terra Nova has such obvious, instant and demographically diverse appeal - sci-fi fans, fantasy fans, 5-year-olds, 50-year-olds, Al Gore - that you have to wonder why no one thought of it before.

The slowdown of the show's pace is one thing, but the real issue here is that the family element often feels inauthentic and just isn't up to the quality of the CGI-fueled action sequences.
