After the four episodes I've seen, Traffic Light is Perfect Couples and Better With You meets Perfect Couples and Better With You being funnier. That's a start.

Traffic Light winds up with a negative hat trick, in which I found myself not caring about any of its three male leads.

It's the kind of show that viewers have seen before and there's no reason to see it again.

Traffic Light is a no-"GO" for me. Or, as I tend to think of it after having watched four derivative episodes: "STOP" me if you've heard this before.

The formula may be hokey, but "Traffic Light's" execution of it is charming, and funny in a way that doesn't seem to be trying too hard.

The opening night lesson of the new Fox sitcom "Traffic Light" is that no matter how marvelous hands-free telephone technology has become, it isn't yet advanced enough to carry its own sitcom.

Silly in places, the show seldom careens over the top, and manages to elicit periodic laughs from all three of its couplings.

Unfortunately, it's forced in humor and uncertain in tone. And surely there are some viewers who are tired of watching stunted-adolescent men complain about the women in their lives.

In the same way that Modern Family has been able to mine comic gold out of everyday struggles, Light keeps the couple-banter and the friend-banter surprisingly relatable and, in the biggest shocker, enormously funny.

Nothing matters more to a television show than sharp writing and good acting, both of which "Traffic Light" has in abundance.

All five characters transcend the cheap stereotypes that lazy writers so frequently use to populate their sitcoms. That may not be enough to propel their show into syndication, but for a Fox sitcom, even cautious optimism is a step in the right direction.
