If you're looking for an old-fashion, creepy, atmospheric suspense thriller that delivers the chills without being bloody or disgusting, Guillermo del Toro's Mama is the perfect movie for you.
I'll start of by saying that Jessica Chastain was the best thing about this movie. Her performance basically carried the whole film; it reminded me greatly of Rooney Mara in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. I would expect nothing less from an Oscar nominated actress. I'm not sating her role in the film is Oscar worthy, but it definitely shows she has talent. I would have given this movie a 3.5, but I had one problem with the movie that made me take it away, and that reason is Mama herself. Now, don't get me wrong she looked fantastic and very disturbing, but she was shown too early in the movie and then too often afterwards so after you saw her once the surprise was gone and then the movie just wasn't that scary anymore. Aside from that and an ending that doesn't really give you the effect it wants to, Mama is creepy, atmospheric, and very entertaining. Plus it's much better than most of the new PG-13 horror movies out there. If you're a horror movie fan or if you're just looking for a good scare, check it out. You might be surprised. |
