Kick Ass was a rather unknown film when it first came out. It met great reviews and once it hit DVD, it became a cult classic just like that. I wasn't a fan of the first film....Matter of fact, I hated it, but I understood the hype and novelty enough to respect it on it's own terms. So 3 years later, they release the sequel Kick Ass 2. Now, this film was panned critically but fans of the first loved this film.....I'm sorry, I'm not on the same page......again.
Kick Ass 2 begins a couple years after the first. Kick Ass and Hit Girl have started a craze of superhero wannabes and earned a cult classic. However, the mourning son of the villain of the first is.....well butthurt. After some rather funny accidents, he acquires a gimp suit and becomes the world's first super villain. The plot is ludicrous and vulgar, but that's what it wants. Then, we are given Hit Girl's personal life and let me say......this SUCKED. Seriously, in a bland attempt at trying to satire teenage girls, they get nothing from me, not even a chuckle. And then, we meet the saving grace of the film: Jim Carrey. The first made the big mistake of killing off the best part of the film: Nicolas Cage. Then, Carrey comes in as the Nicolas Cage of the film. He had some big shoes to fill and while he was excellent as a standalone, he couldn't compare to Cage's awesomeness. Then, they kill him off as well, and we're forced to sit through more of the boring stuff. Oh, but let me say this: McLovin......was amazing too. He completely owns the Motherfucker. That guy was effectively creepy and funny. It was like he was born to play this role.
Overall, this film was bland, vulgar, and had 1 dimensional characters (a complaint I forgot to write). Though it had some great acting by Carrey and Plasse, the film fall through due to the uninspired dialogue. And the novelty of Hit Girl saying 'cunt' or 'cocksucker' or 'fuck' is gone because....well she's a teen and teens cuss like that! Overall, 2.5/10.
