Stone Reader is an interesting and well-made documentary about the search for a long-lost author who wrote one great book and then disappeared. The movie covers over two years of the director's life as he travels the country in search of the illusive author. The movie, in general, fascinating but it seems at point to be overly drawn-out. There are points when it appears that the director delays finding the author for the sake of talking to yet another former colleague. The interviews are in-depth and interesting. They are honest in a way that you generally don’t get from TV interviews… it was almost as if some of the interviewees didn’t think that the film would actually get released. The payoff at the end is worth it… as you get a glimpse of the subject-author and what has become of his life. It’s not a pretty picture. It’s a solid documentary, maybe not in the league of Capturing the Friedman’s, but it’s very good.
