"Wayward...by going off into a subplot, involving military men, wanting women to give them a reason to live and to abuse. This plot path I felt diminished the 2nd half of the film. To me the movie should've stayed with the dilemmas of the survival situation against the infected, instead of going into cavemen territory." I'm in total agreement with you there. The second half of the film took a major shift in the direction of the movie--I direction that I personally didn't care too much for. 0 Replies | Report Abuse The 2nd half shifted to a more realistic subplot, dealt with unrealistically. The ending was also very poor. 1 Replies | Report Abuse Yeah the ending was a bit limp. Still overall it was'nt bad... I did like the way they visualised the "zombies". It was close to the Dawn of the Dead remakes zombies. I like zombies to be fast moving and ferocious, like rabid animals. The 'slow" brainless ones ( like Shaun of the Dead) are'nt very scarey. 0 Replies | Report Abuse The old movie Omega Man would appeal to you, and the older Last Man on Earth, if you haven't seen them. 1 Replies | Report Abuse Yeah I've seen both of those...though not for ages. Omega man had Charlton Heston if memory serves. And Last Man on Earth had Vincent Price in one of his better films...I think. I remember it scared the shit out of me when I first saw it as a kid. 0 Replies | Report Abuse I completely agree with your review. 0 Replies | Report Abuse Wow..we are left to shake our heads in amazement how anybody could enjoy this awful film, but will leave it at that. 0 Replies | Report Abuse |

I'd go one or two higher on Bad Santa, or maybe not... in any case, I thought Billy Bob was absolutely hysterical, as was his sidekick, whose name I can't remember... 1 Replies | Report Abuse Hmmm...I guess I found Billy Bob funny, but the film did'nt have substance for me...a premise based on easy jokes about a drunk...Also I thought his sidekick, really struggled with his performance, hence it was awkward...still thats the beauty of RT...airing opinion in the spirit of agreeing to disagree...;-) 0 Replies | Report Abuse Das Boot remains THE submarine movie to watch. The creaky effects still work, for the most part, since their unterseeboat was creaky too. For an animated story I preferred the Toy Story duo, although I would rate Incredibles higher than a 6, and it is terrific visually as you say. I never thought drunks were funny for more than about 10 seconds, Santa or not. Its like laughing at drug addicts. 1 Replies | Report Abuse Agree re: Das Boot and creakiness comment...I've been checking out a PC game Silent Hunter III, buggy as hell, but with really sweet graphics and some good gameplay. On 2nd thought I have been a bit mean to The Incredibles..a 7 or 8 would be fairer....I think I was to hype affected. Ditto re: "laughing at drug addicts" comment. Santa gives us a stereotype of a movie drunk not the real deal...the real deal are'nt necessarily that funny. 0 Replies | Report Abuse The Incredible's symbolism and poignance blew me away. ITA with your observation that this was animation as animation, not genre. In other words, this wasn't just for the kiddies, it was just a good--IMO transcendent--movie that happened to be animated. 1 Replies | Report Abuse Thx for comment Miss B yes I'm feeling guilty about this one...I should have given it a higher score...a 7 or 8...I think I was still too hype affected when I saw it. I'll should check it out again and reassess. P.S. Whats ITA an acronym for? Cheers Brip 1 Replies | Report Abuse Man, it's good to see you around. ITA is "I Totally Agree." Yeah, I don't expect everyone to be as blown away by The Incredibles as I was, but it just touched me in a way none of the other animated films did. I enjoyed this movie lots! When I saw I, Curmudgeon at the Brisbane Film Fest, Pekar was one of the interviewees. Every time he came on screen, people started laughing even before he said anything. This must be due to this movie, since his Letterman appearances probably never aired down here. I'm with you in never having liked the Crumb style comics... 0 Replies | Report Abuse |

How did you come by viewing such as that? 1 Replies | Report Abuse The short story...a bored mood.... ....Anaconda was useful also for inducing a nice fatigue, enabling me to yawn and feel like sleeping. unfortunately i got The Manchurian Candidate out as well...which I enjoyed much better....it held my interest damn it...disturbing my desire for lethargy. 1 Replies | Report Abuse Was it the new one or the old one? 1 Replies | Report Abuse Yay! More Brip please! 1 Replies | Report Abuse (doffs hat) How you doin RT...Cheers Mate. 1 Replies | Report Abuse I'm doing well, thanks. Totally exhausted though - going to sleep early tonight. But still, glad to see a review here! 0 Replies | Report Abuse Hey Brip, on a completely unrelated note, in your pictures there's a shot of a poster under a bare light bulb - is that Ian Curtis? Or just a random guy, or someone I don't recognise? 1 Replies | Report Abuse Hey Rockin...well spotted yes Ian Curtis...its a photo I took many years ago of a Joy Division poster on the wall in a mates flat. I quite liked Joy Division at the time...especially the 'Closer' album. Re: The Manchurian Candidate...its the remake I'm going to review (when I get around to writing it)...unfortunately I have'nt seen the original....which I must check out one day. 1 Replies | Report Abuse Closer is a spectacular album. I hardly listen to it at all anymore (which is probably a good sign in terms of mental health!), but it is definitely my favorite of theirs by a fair margin... You must see the original Manchurian Candidate. It's very good, and resonates quite well even now that the communists aren't quite the menace they seemed to be at the time (which is partly why I thought the remake was unnecessary). 0 Replies | Report Abuse The one redeeming quality of the first Anaconda is the Voight character winking after he's been swallowed by the snake 'monster'. 0 Replies | Report Abuse |

Would you say this film is not for everybody? I've heard it described as having the worst torture sequence. I'm not much a fan of gore...do you think i could take it? 0 Replies | Report Abuse Yes I would say its not for everybody...but I think its a good movie. The extended torture sequence is well done, not gory, but intense. I reckon you could take it, as its quite a funny scene in a "black humour" sort of way....But I'm not very squeamish. :-) 0 Replies | Report Abuse The pace was such that I never need watch again, and any trailer for the movie (even the scene on the menu backgorund) unfortunately lessens the impact of the climax, but I felt it was well done. In other news, the ghost of brip has been reborn human. You seem to be in full swing lately. 1 Replies | Report Abuse yes BP i found a burst of journal energy after a 12 month break...due mostly to lethargy and boredom with it (plus other life entanglements)... hoping the burst lasts for awhile..as i enjoy this activity...but dont knwo how long it will last... still, i will do it as i feel it... This film was actually pretty decent. Still has bias (of course--it's Moore we're talking about after all), but it's more focused on the actual subject than the volatile "Fahrenheit 9/11". However, one thing that's better about "Fahrenheit 9/11" than "Bowling for Columbine" is that Moore himself is not in it as much. I heard rumors that the next "documentary" (emphasis on the quotes) is going to be on HMOs. That would be an interesting thing to watch since I don't particularly care f 0 Replies | Report Abuse We agree with Simon...we saw this quite some time ago, but thought it was too heavily melodramtic to be truly effective. A memorable moment has Moore placing a young girl's photo on Heston's property, and slinking away with shoulders slumped, oh so sad, and we can imagine the word "cut" being yelled and the manipulation stopped...probably had a laugh, they did, about how thick they laid it on. He accuses others of being exploitive, and his tactics are of the same nature. 0 Replies | Report Abuse I like Michael Moore. I know that some people take issue with the fact that he calls his movies documentaries, yet they are clearly opinion pieces. I got into a huge argument with my husband about this, as I don't think the two things are nor should be mutually exclusive. The main reasons I don't have a problem with Moore is A.) I actually think he does good work, i.e. his stuff is funny and poignant and powerful B.) He doesn't pretend to be anything less than hugely biased C.) I happen to agree 0 Replies | Report Abuse Reading others' comments I just wanted to add that I hope Moore never "shows both sides." Uh, his stuff is opinion. His opinion. (One that roughly half the US often agrees with :)) ANd he's never made any attempt to disguise this. He's admitted candidly to his bias...on all the topics he covers. So long as he's doing that, I'll have no beef with him. If Michael Moore made an even-handed, unsentimental, unmanipulative documentary...it wouldn't be a Michael Moore film. And then what's the point 1 Replies | Report Abuse I agree completely here Miss B...I like Moore because as a 'provocateur' his position is transparent and not hampered by a woolly objectivity. And he KNOWS that and sticks to his guns that way. I'd be interested to hear what Moore has to say about the recent election you've had. I wonder what he would put the U.S. voting Bush back in down too....No doubt he's extremely disappointed. 0 Replies | Report Abuse |

I believe the only reason I received this movie so well was because nothing could be as awful as the book, and at least this gave me pretty colors to look at. I'd pretty much agree with this review in all particulars, Brip. Michael Mann just makes good films as far as I'm concerned. If they could have come up a better final 20 minutes, it could have been great. I'm not sure if I could even imagine a worse way to end this one.... But still, I'd watch it again, and maybe just stop at the point where the action shifts to Jada Pinkett Smith's building.... 1 Replies | Report Abuse Hey rockin...thx for comment. Yes its a quality effort, but hampered by the need to wrap things up simply and neatly, betraying the potential enigmatic qualities it could have had. I'm not overly needful for things to make sense, just have an overall 'feel' of integrity throughout. Maybe making a more difficult, less meaningfully neat ending would have threatened box office...who knows. I quite like some of the films Mann has made. Though I have'nt seen Manhunter, which I've been told is 1 Replies | Report Abuse Manhunter is one of my favorites. Thief is quite good too, but I'd put it a cut or two below Manhunter and Heat. Which is still pretty good in my book. All I could think of at the end of Collateral is why does it have to be another damsel in distress ending? Everything up until then had been reasonably unusual, but then it just kicked into a cliche ending. Multiple cliches, really... 1 Replies | Report Abuse FINALLY...some props for Tom Cruise. I don't care if he is pretty, the man can act. I just didn't get into this movie the way you did, though now I'm thinking I missed something while I was watching it. I may give this movie another chance to grow on me. And,yes, I'm sorry about the pat Hollyood ending. I apologize on behalf of my country. :) 1 Replies | Report Abuse Hey Miss B...I have to agree that Tom is an underrrated actor. Though when he got his academy award for Born on the 4th of July, I was disappointed. As i thought it a terrible movie. They could have given him an award for a 1/2 doxen other films. I remember jokes, based just on ocular evidence, that the "alien" was human. You already explain that is not meant to be the case, but it brings up a great thought. Which is really rare for me since I'll watch almost anything... A major disappointment in my book. On the other hand, very glad that you're back! The Brip-less month was too long. 1 Replies | Report Abuse Yes Tim, despite my positive rating, I agree it was a major disappointment. But it got fresh due to the 'guilty pleasure' phenomena. (or affliction?) Cheers re: 'Bripless' comment...thx ;-) 1 Replies | Report Abuse I can entirely relate to the whole guilty pleasure thing. I have a friend that really liked it because he would pay to see a movie that consisted solely of Jodie Foster reading the phone book... and I've got a few that I rate higher than they objectively should be too. 0 Replies | Report Abuse Yes, the end was lame. ABout as lame as they come. But I found the rest of the movie downright butterflies-in-my-tummy exhilerating. Perhaps because I have a geeky obsession with space/aliens/space travel, etc. Anyhoo, I just thought most of the science fiction stuff was really well done. I loved the spaceship. I'd never classify this as a guilty pleasure because I downright just really liked it...although it's funny...as I read your review, I actually agreed with most of your criticism. ;) 0 Replies | Report Abuse |
