True Stories (1986)
Agrees With....
Posted on 8/23/04 at 10:30 AM I'm a huge fan of David Byrne. Let's get that out of the way to begin with. I think it's only fair that you know that I'm biased in that regard, because make no mistake, this movie is a bit weird. It's not really about anything exactly as it really just tells a semi-coherent story of one man's (John Goodman) search for love. The real payoff is the way David Byrne tells his story and the monotone narrative style he has that is truly a Byrne trademark. His odd narrative interjection and quirky outfits help make this movie what is best described as cult classic. Not to mention, there are a few Talking Heads songs dwelling within, which, though doing nothing at all as far as pushing the movie forward, offer a couple really interesting moments. The lip synced version of Wild Wild Life is notably worth a view as David Byrne makes a brief appearance wearing a funny moustache. As movies go, it doesn't really have much to say, but if you have ever been a Byrne fan or are into movies that are a little bit different and perhaps somewhat "off", this one is for you.

I love this film...it's long been one of my favorites. It's hard not to feel moved by the sincerity of the tone, and particularly Goodman's concert performance at the end of the film. The final result, I think, is one of charming, but not overly so, quirkiness combined with genuine heart and curiosity.

Byrne is inarguably a genius. I found this DVD (pan&scan, argh) for $5.50 in a huge bin at Walmart, and as far as I could tell, it was the only copy. Guess it was my lucky day. Byrne is one of my heroes. :D
