Starring: Patricia Arquette, Dermot Mulroney, Mary-Louise Parker, Don Johnson, Vincent Gallo, and Ellen DeGeneres.
Directed by Roland Joffe.
Written by Ron Peer, Joel Cohen, and Alec Sokolow.
Rated R (for sexuality, language and violence).
Running time approximately 1 hour 41 minutes.

Hey, look! The best part of this movie

Roland Joffe cannot direct a period piece or adapt a book into a film, as was made evident by the atrocity that was The Scarlet Letter (1995). Now, Joffe proves that he cannot create a violent sex-comedy/thriller with Goodbye Lover, a film whose plate is far too full, whose characters are merely caricatures and whose overabundance of plot leads one to long for plotlessness. DeGeneres is wonderful here, though, and her scenes make it almost worthwhile for more than a single viewing. Mostly, though, this one's DOA. *1/2 (out of ****) C-
