"Battlestar Galactica: The Miniseries" is a decent rehash of the original series. Adding the cylon capablility of being able to be a human is a nice and sinister touch. Its not as lighthearted and goofyesque like the original and by just making it more dramatic and darker while changing characters sexes and glossing it over with jazzy effects doesn't seem too much of an improvement to me either.
That being said, the new series is even less impressive. After watching 4 episodes I've come to the conclusion that after the first episode it all goes down hill. It starts with changing Starbuck into a female character. I have no problems with that, its just the actress playing her isn't very impressive and it doesnt help that her character is written so boringly (Can anyone say Maverick in Top Gun?). Capt. Apollo is fairly intriguing, much like in the original, but on occasion you can hear his practiced American accent slip, not enough to reveal his british accent, but sometimes enough to be distracting.
The effects and production design are slick nice although the ugly Galactica looks like a big old potato in my opinion. The battle sequences are fair. I would much rather see more one on one type dogfight scenes between a viper and a raider to give us a deeper sense of danger and excitement affecting the characters. I find an entire battle sequence shown to us in a master shot of 20 vipers flying towards 100 raiders shooting lasers to be quite boring. On the strong side however there is Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell and James Callis; all quite excellent, each commanding attention when onscreen.
All in all an average remake attempt but due to its lack of new material (reshaping/copying of old stories!) I believe it to be destined to last only 2 seasons max. I think I'll have to buy the box set of the old series...
