I love that Beauty-truth quote. It's perfect. My local vid store has started getting more classics in, so this will be on my list. :) 0 Replies | Report Abuse Keats is great, to be sure. As superficial as I was, I used to think he was talking about... PHYSICAL beauty! A Top 10 list is a tranistory thing, eh? I've always been a big Bogart fan, so I can't overlook him; but it's hard to choose between Casablanca and Sierra Madre, just as it's hard to pick ONE John Huston film. (Maltese Falcon seems to be his most popular, for some reason.) 0 Replies | Report Abuse |

So as I see, you liked the movie a lot! And rightly, didn't let yourself influence by critics! Good on ya! Great review, by the way! 1 Replies | Report Abuse I can't get that ending out of my mind. It was so "bloody" amazing (and it wasn't in the book either, so it was totally unexpected). 1 Replies | Report Abuse I loved the ending too! If not for that, I think the movie would have felt a little incomplete! I haven?t read the book, so it was all unexpected! And exiting! (which was good that way!) 0 Replies | Report Abuse |

Do you know that I borrowed this from the libraray a few months ago and about 40 minutes in it just stopped playing because it had so many scratches on it? ARGH. It made me so angry I wanted to toss it out of the window. 1 Replies | Report Abuse Now you have an excuse to go out and get the Criterion DVD edition, Jungle J ;) DO IT... AND DO IT NOW! # Available subtitles: English # Available Audio Tracks: Swedish (Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono), English (Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono) # Commentary by noted film historian Peter Cowie # An annotated, illustrated Bergman filmography, featuring excerpts from Wild Strawberries and The Magician with commentary # Improved English subtitles # Restoration demonstration # Original theatrical trailer 0 Replies | Report Abuse "A skull is more interesting than a naked woman" The man clearly hasn't seen enough naked women. Of course, that might have been more of an issue in pre-internet days. I love the description of this as a 'slice of life'... for some reason it just strikes me as funny! I'm the son of a Lutheran pastor too, but I haven't made any thing nearly this substantial. I think I'm underachieving.... 1 Replies | Report Abuse I'm the son of a WANTED-TO-BE (???) Lutheran pastor (who looks quite a bit like Humphrey Bogart, which doesn't quite go with the turned-around collar). Just don't tell me it's Missouri Synod ;) Your family must've been from Minnesota, eh? Um... slice of life? Well yeah, in a way, for that time it was. And it IS quite funny, the way it's written. Um... the naked woman thing. You could look at from Woody Allen's pov and just say that sex and death are kissin' cousins. ??? Bu 1 Replies | Report Abuse Definitely not Missouri Synod! *shudders* ALC prior to the merger.... and yeah, my Dad's family is from Minnesota, my Mom's from Washington (state). Both families originally from Scandinavia... 1 Replies | Report Abuse Isn't it amazing... how easy the Lutherans are to profile??? LOL! In fact, it was incredible to see so many blonde-haired, blue-eyed people in one place. Ethically, we all seemed fairly compatible. Bergman's Lutheran bg seems to inform his creativity. But then again, the same could be said for David Hasselhoff. BTW: I actually attended a Missouri Synod baptism... where only THEIR people were allowed to take communion. Un-frickin-real. But THEY'RE the ones who actually believe th Great review, Frederic. Really informative. Makes me want to go back and take another look at this film. Are non-Lutherans allowed? ;) 1 Replies | Report Abuse no. frickin. way. ;) Well, I GUESS it's okay, as long as you're a Protestant. 0 Replies | Report Abuse I've heard alot about this one, and I'll have to check it out. Good review. 1 Replies | Report Abuse "Good review" Damn right. What else did you expect? ;) Hey Agent-man. Wanna read a REALLY brilliant review (from the amazon page)? This made me laff for a full ten minutes, and taught me a lot about life in general... 'As I watched this film, I thought I, was watching a comedy movie. As a previous poster wrote, the acting is poor along with a very uneven plot indeed. We start with Max von Sydow at the Swedish seashore with his squire about to play chess with Death. Ridley's direction is pure genius once again. Unfortunately, this one is fated as you say, never to make the same box office return as The PotC. The comparison really isn't a fair one, but the difference between PotC and KoH is simple: controversy. KoH is not controversial in any sense of the word, which is a shame due to its potentially controversial subject. It is different than past epics: showing Muslim leaders to be not as blood thirsty as the Christian Crusaders. But this is what anyone wo 1 Replies | Report Abuse And wouldn't we be doing the same, having achieved Scott's success? i.e, make the films that SHOULD be made... only no one else has the guts or the $$$ to make them ;) Actually, there was a time - not long ago - when Saladin was typically portrayed as the villain. The Saladin of KoH is much closer to the facts of history. Later, Richard never fought him directly, but negotiated. Saladin's career was an incredibly long one, and with good reason. He was a pragmatist. I think Gibson was t 1 Replies | Report Abuse I don't think you can call what Gibson did "safe" by any stretch of the word. Putting up his OWN 40 mil for a film that was attacked a full year before it ever was screened seemed like financial suicide. (I read an IMDB report on it about a year before it came out talking about the subject). Gibson had the vatican to deal with, the highly upset jewish community, and the ire of a certain NY TIMES reporter and plenty of others, not to mention questions of his sanity and about his family. I think i 1 Replies | Report Abuse There is a growing body of evidence that persuades many scholars that Jesus and his family were of the Essene tradition i.e. Jewish sectarians. This would account for everything he said and did, because it had all been said and done before. These same sectarians had already defined their son of Man at least 300 years before Jesus started using the term. Anyway, THIS would have been a risk for Mel. I followed the production of his film closely (as a Bellucci fan) and I can assure you that Mel |

This made me laugh my ass off. Even the part about Bridget Jones' Diary. The famale cast is probably what will keep me away. And seeing as how you have ALBA as your nackground image I should just stop now. :D 0 Replies | Report Abuse Don't stop now, JJ! I've actually heard some women rave on about Clive Owen and Josh Hartnett... but that's for them to judge, not me. As for the Sue Storm bg, I thought I showed quite a bit of restraint. After all, I COULD have used this... or this... But I didn't. 0 Replies | Report Abuse I agree with your review. You loved it for about exacly the same reason I hated it. But the style was cool. 1 Replies | Report Abuse Of course. There's no way in hell you're going to CONVERT anyone to see things the way you see them. It was great for me, because I was sitting in a theatre full of fans. We all got off on the same things, it was so cool... because we were all of one mind, in that respect. For the same reason, we all crawled under our seats during Elektra. But if anyone tried to tell me that the film was technically flawed, I'd feel compelled to punch them out ;) 1 Replies | Report Abuse I think the technical aspects of the film will turn out to be as important as Star Wars was. 0 Replies | Report Abuse I don't know, I think I might stay home and brush up on some of the radical feminist literature I got off of Oprah's Book Club list instead. :) 1 Replies | Report Abuse count me IN 0 Replies | Report Abuse Please add the following disclaimer to your sentence: To all feminist female film critics...who are also dumber than a bag of hammers....go an watch Bridget Jones etc... :D 0 Replies | Report Abuse |

wasn't sure if i'd like this one or not, but it was quite entertaining and funny. johnny depp made the movie really, but certainly w/o Burton's set design it wouldn't have been the same. it's another solid entry for Tim Burton's resume. 1 Replies | Report Abuse Ever notice how Depp the Mimic is always "doing" someone (just as Burton the Artist is always caricaturing). For Wonka, he seems to be conjuring PeeWee Herman (which is great). And of course, the symbiosis ;) (Tim and Uncle Vinny, etc...) And YES, dammit... it WAS funny. 0 Replies | Report Abuse |

I hear ya. They've dropped the ball many times in 2005, which makes me wonder if they really deserve the mid-term victories coming their way. They want it both ways... but they gotta get wise to the fact that history is bound to denounce the warmongering of the Bush League in the near future, and they SHOULD be denouncing the invasion of Iraq NOW. More than half the US no longer believes in Dubya's lies, so what do they have to lose?
