Have you ever noticed how fake yearbooks are? It's actually pretty insulting. They're entire purpose is supposed to be the preservation of a school year wrapped around some bullshit theme like "timeless memories", "everlasting time", etc. In reality, they are sugar coated pictures and made up giberish. People smile for pictures, but are they really happy? THey're told to do so, how can this really capture a year, or a particular student. The faces are alligned but what is really said.
I saw this after lookign at one of my yearbooks from a few years ago, it's actually all quite disturbing. I noticed pictures of friends who I didn't know until this year, and I was quite afraid of some photos of myself, and the fact that their available to any yearbook-owning student in my stupid little school.
Aside from scars, journals, whatever it may be, how with this book really help anyone remember hwat happened in whatever year it was made? I'm on the yearbook staff at school this year (which I probably wouldn't have done electively, but I'm taking it as a classs and I suppose it has quite a large heap of perks), and I wish I could have helped to create something a little more in touch with reality. But sadly, it's just another pile of the same shit. To paraphrase Angela Chase of My So-Called Life, if we were to make a book that actually docuemtned the real events of the year, it would be totally depressing. I guess even by being fake, it's still totally depressing. Is not being easily sedated by pretty graphics and bullshit a bad thing?
