Definitely not my favorite Murnau. It's a decent movie that is a little better than average because of Emil Jannings' great performance. Visually, this isn't as interesting as Murnau's other works, and emotionally it doesn't offer much more. It is a neat little tale of morality, but hits viewers over the head a little too hard at times. I guess I also appreciate what this film meant to Murnau as a person (from which I read later), but I try not to give films much merit based solely on what it did for the director's personal life. I try to rate films based on what they mean to me. But I might have slipped a bit on this one...
