The Mephisto Waltz (1971)
Agrees With....
Posted on 10/31/05 at 10:39 AM Garden State
So, what was the big deal about this film? I kept hearing things like "defines a generation" and so forth... where was that? Are these people serious? It's skillfully done, especially for a first time writer / director, but starring in it as well seems like some real vanity on the part of Zach Braff. Unnecessarily quirky and often meandering, I don't think this movie is worth anything more than an average rating. Still :fresh:, but that's all. Mephisto Waltz Caught this on cable... an interesting occult melodrama, not terrific, and featuring a singularly unappealing performance by Jaqueline Bissett, but worth it for an absolutely terrific ending. Really nice score by a younger Jerry Goldsmith, too. And, because I watched them over the last week, ratings for the seminal Ghostbusters and its pale shadow of a sequel, and The Omen, a spooky little thriller that diminishes on repeat viewings, but still quite good. |

This is the second time recently I found myself needing to defend Garden State and not being able to put it into words. I only saw it once in the theater, but I felt it. I know that's not a good description, but something in me just identified with its meandering and its bittersweet humour. I keep remembering the scene where Braff is wearing a shirt that is exactly the same as the wallpaper and looking lost. And I felt it.
I'll watch it again and come up with some better reasoning :)

Also, the Omen, aside from Halloween, has the best horror music ever.

Aram, your description of Garden State is right on point with how I feel about it; "Unnecessarily quirky and often meandering" sounds just about right. It was OK, I just never really cared about it that much, and was actually slightly annoyed by it at times.
dibot, you ain't lyin' about that Omen music! It's awesome.

I liked Garden State because Braff seems to have such a great instinct for characters and scenes. I could relate to his character, and have been to similar points in my life. I got a great kick out of seeing the portrayals of running into high school classmates, and how he dealt with customers at his job.
What really made me like Garden State was how convincingly Braff portrays how Sam really brings about a change in him.
I definitely don't think it ranks up with the great movies (imdb has it listed as one of the top 250 movies of all time), but I was really suprised by how I related to these characters and Large's feeling of numbness and being lost. I didn't even feel it was worth seeing again, but it was definitely worth watching.
Of course, by now I'd like to see it again.

Cool, thanks for the comment.
Like I say, I don't think it was a bad film -- in fact, it's a great debut for Braff, I think he's got great things in store for him if he doesn't go off the rails.

Yeah, Braff has alot of potential in Hollywood. Currently he is on that tv show Scrubs, probably a good thing, as it will allow him to be grounded somewhat before venturing into other movies.
Aram, I hope you like his next movie (whatever it may be)
Also a BIG reason I liked the movie was the soundtrack. Nothing like pussy man rock to soothe the soul!! =)

I don't remember the soundtrack that much, but... I'm an old fucker, so...
