Stay Alive should have been titled Stay Awake, because that is the real challenge of this game...err...sorry movie. Stay Alive is about a group of teenagers who get ahold of an underground video game called Stay Alive. Soon after they discover they're being murdered in the same way as the character they played in the game. In the end they must try to unravel the mystery of the game, and find a way to stay alive. Well this at least sounds like an interesting plot for a movie. I'll even go so far as to say it had potential, but sadly falls short of anything remotely good. The idea for this movie reminded me of The Ring with a killer video game in place of a killer video tape. I think the makers of the film were trying to go this route, but ended up with something more like The Ring 2. Not that its saying much, but The Ring 2 might even be better then this one. From start to finish every single thing in this movie is completely ridiculous. Are we really supposed to believe that these people are twenty something video game nerds? Well all except for Frankie Muniz, who I'll buy as a nerd any day. Also, how many of you are clerks at at a company, and play online video games with your boss? I won't even get into Frankie Muniz's characters sudden resurrection at the end of the movie, or how Jon Foster and Samaire Armstrong's characters always pick the oddest times to make out. If you really feel that you need to see this movie, then my suggestion is to wait until it comes to video and rent it, or at least catch a matinee. All in all I give Stay Alive a C, and mostly because I'm feeling generous.
