    Vina Sardasol

    Posted on 04/28/07 08:54 AM | Last edited on 04/28/07 08:45 AM

I just tried a new wine (to me) called Vina Sardasol (2004). A spanish Tempranillo. Outstanding. Let it breathe before drinking. 30 minutes.

Kung Fu of eight drunken Masters

    Posted on 04/09/06 03:25 PM | Last edited on 04/09/06 03:23 PM

I picked up a couple of "Kung Fu" flicks on the cheap, and this was the first one I watched. If I never see Kung Fu of Eight Drunkards againthat will be just fine.

The wierd thing is, if you looked at these images you might think the film is a typical overly serious Kung Fu film. It's not though. For the most part, it plays a comedy. The print I saw was terrible. Grainy, jumpy, at times the way it was transferred you could only see the sides of people's heads.

I won't get into the bad. There's a lot of that to go around.
There was some good however. You can totally see where Jackie Chan get's his ideas from. There are several fight sequences in here that clearly have been borrowed for more recent films. And one or two of the fights are semi interesting. But, aside from that, this is one of those films where they've added the "swish" and "pop" and "crack" noise to every movement. So in that sense, you might find yourself laughing.

No, I do not recommend this film. Even if you like this sorta stuff. F.

    Fun Good Inexpensive Wine

    Posted on 01/27/06 07:53 PM | Last edited on 01/27/06 07:29 PM

    ia Garnacha 2003

I picked a bottle of this up on a whim. It was on sale $6.99 (US). I loved it. The wine is a simple pleasure, easy to drink, and I found it to be surprisingly complex. From what I understand it is NOT an oak stored wine, so it's missing that "oak flavor" that so many wines possess. Oddly enough, there was some criticisim of this when I read reviews, however I consider it a strength of the wine. It is almost bursting with other bright flavors. Give it a go. I like wines that DO NOT require food to round out their flavor and this fit's the bill. I would say it's an incredible bargain at $6.99. I love Spanish Wines and will post more in here as I try them.

    Massive Attack - Protection

    Posted on 10/11/05 05:23 PM | Last edited on 10/11/05 05:13 PM

I do enjoy a band/song/CD that stands the test of time. Massive Attack's CD Protection is one of those CD's. It's the equivalent of standing in a nice living room, watching rain blow against the windows at dusk. A glass of wine in hand. Smooth beats and shifting synth lines. Along with their other CD Mezzanine, I find both to be almost essential. I am giving both A's.

    Calexico - Feast of Wire

    Posted on 09/23/05 08:55 PM | Last edited on 09/23/05 08:50 PM

I posted a thread about Calexico several months ago and since have spent many hours listening to this CD. Feast of Wire is a brilliant piece of work. From top to bottom the work is complete. Smart, rhythmic playing coupled with beautiful broad instrumentation. The mix is fantastic. Both ambient and "present". It feels like the music is happening in your house or car. Released in 2003 I would call this a "must own" for any true fan of music.

    Voxtrot - Voxtrot

Sadly, while I believe there are perhaps two official releases for this band there is very little info on the band. I think they are both EP's. Anyway, I dig their style. If you liked The Smiths I think you might enjoy this.

Here is a link to three FREE downloads! Just scroll down to Voxtrot.

    Mike Doughty - Haughty Melodic

    Posted on 09/20/05 05:59 PM | Last edited on 09/20/05 05:49 PM

A little more hearfelt and a little less trippy, Soul Coughing's lead singer Mike Doughty puts out a solid first solo record. I recommend driving on a Saturday with the windows open and listen to this. Much like Cake singing the words aloud while driving brings his writing strength into focus. If you listen to Soul Coughing you already know this pleasure.

Mommy And Daddy - FIghting Style Killer Panda EP

This is definitely music for a certain mood. I would call it brat-thrash-in-the- car. I enjoy it. Gives you that "Hey I'm suddenly nodding my head" thing. I like to take single tracks from this band and put them on mixed discs. Highlights how cool the tracks are.

Music 101 The Sugarcubes - Life's Too Good

    Posted on 02/07/05 03:24 PM | Last edited on 02/07/05 03:17 PM

Before Bjork wandered around in a dress made from a swan she was in an amazing band called The Sugarcubes. This is easily one of my favorite CD's from the 80's. It still stands on it's own. I had it on "random" in my car CD changer and constantly crank the volume up every time a track from this CD comes on. Bjork is electric on this album. The band plays VERY well. Crisp tight drumming..smart arrangements, I would say above average guitar parts. I dare you NOT to sing along with this CD. This one has stood the test of time. I'm hooking it up with a big fat A.

I just randomly picked up on your journal. I just decided to click on it, as I do often on here I guess. I was pleasently suprised... first sugarcubes and before that tom waits. I don't really know where to go from there, besides it was pleasent suprise to see someone else who likes the sugar cubes and tom waits.
