If you're not a fan of Forte, or deliberately over-the-top zaniness that's often dragged out to ridiculous lengths, you'll probably hate this movie. If you're not very familiar with or fond of the 80s action movies "MacGruber" is spoofing, you'll probably be confused and end up hating the movie too.
I, on the other hand, think Forte is a comic genius (even if that genius isn't on full display here) and I'm okay with sexual and scatalogical jokes if I think they're delivered well. So I liked it. No surprise that Wiig is hilarious too. What did surprise me was how effective Phillippe was as the straight man, and how much Kilmer does with very little. Putting on my film nerd hat for a second, I did think there were some pacing problems throughout, certain cuts and transitions that happened so quickly they swallowed or killed potentially funny gags. It makes me wonder how much was excised from the movie following the SXSW showing (one scene that features prominently in the trailers is conspicuously absent). Anyway, go if you are a fan of Forte or like stupid humor of the "Dumb and Dumber" or "Airplane" variety (though those movie are probably both slightly superior to "MacGruber"). And bring a friend or two who have a similar sense of humor. And maybe drink a beer or two beforehand. :) Then again, I went alone and was stone sober and I laughed a lot so... make of that what you will. |
