Sunday, normally, means "there's nothing good on TV". So, I pòpped up a DVD in my player and saw "Memories" an anime movie directed by three great japanese directors :Tensai Okamura (Evangelion series), Koji Morimoto (The Animatrix segment "Beyond") and Katsuhiro Otomo (duh! Akira, Steamboy).
The movie consists of three short stories, all related, in some way or another to the issue of memories.
Magnetic Rose - Two agents go to investigate an SOS space signal in an abandoned space station. When they get there, they are haunted by the memories of an Opera Diva. It starts a bit slow but it's definitely one of the best, and shows that animation can make great suspense movies. It's not very surprising: the script was made by Satoshi Kon, the genious behind the great thriller Perfect Blue. 8/10
Stink Bomb - My personal favorite tells the story of a young worker who takes a medicine for his cold but it turns him in a bilogical weapon. Funny and dark it's a great segment. 9/10
Cannon Fodder - the segment tells the story of a kid whose father works in one of the many cannon that the city uses for "attack the enemy city".What city? What war? why? That's the questions that this segments provides. Interesting, yet simple. 7/10
Bottomline: three stories, each one with a special feeling and message. I highly recommend to give it a try. It's worth it.
