Valkyrie almost disappointingly is not nearly as bad as the early buzz suggested. In fact Tom Cruise himself turns in quite a decent performance despite my reservations which will be mentioned later. It isn?t award-worthy, and certainly nothing to really talk about but it is decent. Except for of course the issue with the fact that he has an American accent? Fine, they want us to suspend disbelief that they are all speaking German, but some consistency would have been nice. Tom Cruise gets to have an American whereas some have British accents and others have British/German accents? This is distracting, and really ruins a well-told and important story.
Bryan Singer directs this film meticulously recreating history, and not much else. The story is streamlined and I believe benefits from this approach. The story is tense, thrilling, and should have been very moving by the final scene. In the end, Cruise?s American accent, eye patch and whole appearance all held me back from really identifying with his character. I saw Tom Cruise from the very beginning and not the character he was playing. This is a tragedy for a man who appears to have fought so much for change in Germany, but I just couldn?t buy it. (On a side note Tom Wilkinson was excellent as usual.) I recommend Valkyrie as a basic thriller that does have a pretty incredible story, but I don?t see myself wanting to watch it again.
