Catfish in Black Bean Sauce (2000)
Agrees With....
Posted on 8/26/06 at 5:57 PM Harold and Dolores Williams are two black Americans who have adopted two Vietnamese children, Mia and Dwayne, who are in desperate need of a home. The two children are brought to the U.S. after the unfortunate death of their father and the imprisonment of their mother. Fast-forward 15-18 years and both children are successful adults. Mia has had a life-long ambition to find her mother. When she does finally find her, and brings her to the U.S,. it deeply affects the remaining family’s lives. Dwayne, Mia, and the Williams must cope with this new parental influence. “Mama, you’re trying to stick me with a blind cat?” Chi Muoi Lo delivers Cat Fish and Black Bean Sauce in his directorial debut. Chi Muoi Lo stars, wrote, and directed this wonderful film. His depiction of two cultures is marvelous. He also infused a perfect blend of humor with emotional drama. The cast was also well selected and included Sanaa Lathan, Paul Winfield, Mary Alice, and Lauren Tom. “You spent all this time looking for your mother. You found her; it’s time to stop looking.” The stupid cat conversation, the sleeping cat scene, the ATM fraud taunt, the next Saturday debate, the English lessons scene, the “scaring him” scene, Mia showing Dwayne mom’s room scene, choking on the fishbone story, the story of Vietnamese political refugees, the karaoke scene, the seminar commercial, the adoption scene (splitting up), the “he’s coming” conversation, the “you’re gay” conversation, and the telling Samantha he’s sorry scene were amongst the better portions of the film. “Get some wax.” Cat Fish and Black Bean Sauce is a fresh, new, romantic comedy. Those are two rare elements for this genre of film. Chi Muoi Lo does a wonderful job of picking-at two ethnicities and having a beautiful love story blossom as the outcome. Sanaa Lathan is beautiful in her role (in all her roles honestly). Nevertheless, Chi Muoi Lo’s character was hilarious. This is an underrated film. I strongly recommend this movie to those who enjoy romantic comedies and are looking for something new and aspiring. “Your guest is still here.” Grade: A- |

My in-laws own this. My mother in-law has about 1200 DVDs. Everytime I go to NYC I try to catch 2 or 3 films I have never seen. This one grabbed my attention last time I was here. I hope you see it. When you do flash back on here and remind me to peep your review.

I think you would like it. However, the blockbuster employee at the check-out counter may have a stroke when he sees the prospect of you renting a good film.

Don't lie. Of all the descriptions on that list they never expect you to rent a "decent" movie ;)

XBox360 huh? My hubby and son would die to have it. I am shocked we haven't gotten it yet! What a great wedding present! Do you love it Kevin?

I was not in a big rush to get it honestly. That Dead Rising game came out (it should be called Dawn of the Dead because that's what it is), plus the new Madden, and I told myself, "I can wait till Gears of War comes out." Athena bought it for me though. Your husband will LOVE Gears of War (December release date). There should be some game demos online, try to pull them for him. There are also a few more XBox games I want.
Does you husband have Black? I played that Sunday, it was excellent. That is another game I think he would adore. I MUST HAVE IT. Until then, I have about 4 games I have barely cracked. It is hard to watch movies, play video games, read books, and work 50-60 hours a week. What I am saying is, I'm getting old!!!
Nevertheless, I LOVE it!!!

Well thanks. I am glad you liked it. I thought it was a perfect blend of humor and drama. If more romantic comedies were like this more men would be open to seeing them. Thanks for the compliment again.
