Parts of Sorcerer's Apprentice are really fun. "Old Man Shoe's", flying eagle and homage to Fantasia all work really well. Unfortunately there's just not enough of them. TSA reminds me nothing so much as a low budget Star Wars Prequal i.e. it's attempting to live up to a classic it's never going to be able to match, it's got very little of the wonder that made the original so special, and any scene without a plasma bolt/light saber just doesn't work that well. On the brightside Cage seems to have found a role that even he can't overcamp and Alfred Molina does an admirable job as his nemesis Horvath, unfortunately these characters are just set up for failure with a lame plot set up, silly elements that don't work (The Arcana Cabana? Really and Horvaths ridiculous Criss Angel henchman...should have stuck with the creep girl witch), and Hollywoods unfathomable need to convice us that hot blond girls just really dig Jay Baruchel...spoiler alert, they don't. I gotta say, I'm a little disappointed in Turtletaub and Bruckheimer. I don't know if it's you or god forbid that I might actually be growing up, but I just expected better. It's fun enough for a saturday afternoon, but it probably won't stick with you into Saturday night.
