Not a good movie in the least, unless you are into depressing for the sake of depressing and not for the sake of making a point.

I don't understand a lot of the hate for this film. Visually it is outstanding. There are elements in this film which, yes, they'll probably be using in another 60 years. The pace and acting is fine, with Rapace and Fassbender giving the best performances. The gripe would be that not everything is explained (which is fine). Considering the scope of the film, I didn't expect everything to be answered. And, second, there are parts where something occurs and there isn't enough consideration between the characters as to what just happened (which will probably be included in an extended version).

Although the premise is unbelievable (what are the odds of this occurring/why would these particular fighters merit such a huge stage to fight on?), Warrior is very entertaining. The family drama and the fight scenes (incredible) are worth seeing this film. Better movie than The Fighter.

Unwatchable. This is one of those movies where, I think, people see the actors talking fast and assume they must be saying something worthwhile- so worthwhile that its meaning requires multiple viewings to understand. Instead, the characters are just fast-talking to hide the fact that what they are saying is inconsequential. Frankly, this movie was a bore. If you want a good "Western powers involved in the Middle East" movie, watch Syriana, not In the Loop.

    Love and Other Drugs (2010)
    Genre:
    Drama

    Posted on 7/31/11 05:49 AM

Love And Other Drugs is about a pharmaceutical salesman (Jake Gyllenhaal) who meets a young woman (Anne Hathaway) who has Parkinson's disease. At first, they are just F-buddies, trying to lose themselves in sex so that they can forget their situations. However, love happens and then things get complicated because Hathaway's character knows her condition will not get any better and wants to be alone.

Dancing between comedy and drama, there are refreshing moments in the movie. When the film shows you the inside of pharmaceutical sales, you get an idea of why the healthcare industry is so messed up. Then, when you hear the honest talk from a man who's wife has had Parkinson's disease for 30+ years, you might wonder to yourself what you would do if you were in Gyllenhaal's shoes.

The problem with Love And Other Drugs though is that it takes the honest situations it begins with and goes Hollywood on you towards the end. Had Love stayed on its original course, went more drama than comedy/Hollywood, it had the premise of a great character study. However, I realize, by doing so it would not have been a date type of movie and would not have been aimed at the audience it wanted to capture.

    True Grit (2010)
    Genre:
    Western

There are three stars in the movie True Grit. One is newcomer Haillee Steinfeld as a 14 year old girl on the trail of her dad's murderer and who can handle her own in the Old West. Two is Jeff Bridges, playing a cantankerous US Marshall. Bridges steals the movie. He behaves like my dad (a WW2 and Korea vet.) use too- mean, and straight to the point. And, Three, is the West itself; brought alive with vivid colors, characters, and language by the Coen Brothers.

True Grit is a simple story of revenge. A man is killed and his daughter seeks the assistance of others to track him down. I doubt any special effects were used, nor were their odd camera angles, etc. to keep the viewer interested. This being unusual in itself, since those methods are pretty much the Coen Brothers' forte. But, the movie is effective. It shows how one character's (Haillee) determination can have a great affect upon other people. My only complaint would be that there wasn't an "it" moment in the film. An "it" moment is when an event occurs or something is said that I know will stay with me years from now. That did not occur. However, the movie was well-made and well-played, so what else can someone ask for?

Suggest watching the original and better True Grit, not this thankless remake by the Coens who refused to acknowledge the film make before it.

    Genre:

Is Captain America a great movie? No. Is Captain America a movie you will talk about years from now? No. But is Captain America a fun, summer movie to go watch when it is 90+ degrees out? Yes.

During WW2, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), a 90lb weakling, wants nothing more than to help his country. After many attempts, he finally gets his chance in the form of becoming a super-soldier. However, he is not the only one, since the Nazis have their own super-soldier in the form of The Red Skull.

With good super-hero movie dialogue (probably because it wasn't so explanatory), great effects to make a muscular Evans look like a wimp, and humor provided by Tommy Lee Jones, Captain America is a solid summer-fare movie.

My one gripe would be the action sequences: often they were not played up, allowing a sense of dread and "what's going to happen next" feel for the audience. Instead, the action scenes began and ended pretty abruptly and without warning. Had they taken a little more time in the editing room, Cap would have been a very-solid outing.

I liked this one too. It wasn't smart, or great cinema, but that doesn't mean one can't have fun with it. It's a well-made, well-intentioned Summer actioner; and that's all it needed to be. I enjoyed the look and feel of the film, Evans' performance, although the film had some flaws in the character department. You however have written a great review.

Spoilers from previous Harry Potter's below...

The Harry Potter movies are much like the work of Joss Whedon: The stories get better as the series moves along because the creators are able to build upon character developments which already have occurred.

The Deathly Hallows picks up from the ending of its successor, The Half-Blood Prince, with the ramifications of Dumblebore's death and the ascension of the evil Voldermort. Harry Potter and his friends are now on the run, trying to find mysterious items called horcruxes before Voldermort's army attacks. Even though The Deathly Hallows is only Part 1 or a two part movie, it still manages a solid ending, but one without an overall resolution.

It didn't happen, that moment when you are watching a Harry Potter movie and go "that's pretty cool." As I watched the final installment of the Harry Potter series, I was waiting for that moment, but it didn't occur. At least not for me.

I should state that I have liked, not loved, but really liked the Harry Potter movies. They have seem fit for the age group they are made for, and those adults who just want to get away for 2.5 hrs. They have allowed me to escape to another world where pictures move, books aren't what you think they are, and, sometimes, the most scary creatures are the most friendly.

However, likely because The Deathly Hallows, Part 2 is the last film in the franchise and it needed to "sum up" everything that has taken place before, it failed to add something new. And it has always been the new aspects of the Harry Potter movies that I have liked the most.

This is not to say that HP is a bad movie. It isn't, as my rating states. But it does bog down some and has a scene or two where I thought "too much back story, what is going on here?" When, instead, I was waiting for the final showdown between Harry and He Who Must Not Be Named. Maybe because I thought the first Deathly Hallows was so good, I felt the second was a let down.

    Horrible Bosses (2011)
    Genre:
    Comedy

    Posted on 7/15/11 04:41 AM

Horrible Bosses is offensive, subversive, and sexist...but I laughed a lot during the movie. Following three friends who have, naturally, Horrible Bosses, the film follows them as they plan on having their bosses eliminated, to improve their own lives. The movie borrows the Hitchcock premise from Strangers on a Train of each friend killing their other friends' boss, as to eliminate their own participation in the matter. However, per expectation, things do not go as planned.

Although the movie is based upon a wild premise, I believe the best aspect of the film was its ability to sell that premise. Due to our current state of economic affairs, one can almost believe people preferring to eliminate their boss, then to try and find a better job. The other aspect of the film to enjoy is that none of the main characters really become "the character" of the movie. This is an ensemble movie which works because the actors work well together, instead of doing their best to steal the scene.
