Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
It's just mind boggling to me that no one in Hollywood these days can make a quality film about pirates. A grand rousing adventure where you as the viewer actually care about the characters and thier fates! A story of true swashbuckling adventure, swooning romance and edge of your seat thrills! Can no one pull this off? Really?
Ugh, instead here in this 4th installment of the Pirates series we get meaningless sword fights where characters simply clang swords together with no emotion tied to the battles what so ever. We're blasted with the over use of silly CGI effects, goofy sorcery, useless zombies, terribly thought out romance and a plot that lacks any kind of cohesion, it literally bounces from one act to the next and throws in a few Jack Sparrow close up's and jokes in between for good measure.
After saying that, this film isn't all bad. It has a 'few' moments here and there that entertain but honestly the light from this series went out a long time ago but some folks simply love Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow character so much that they're willing to put up with all the sheer nonsense and bad story telling going on around him. And so I fear that we may get yet another mediocre (or worse) Pirates of the Caribbean movie in the near future.
To wrap it up... 'On Stranger Tides' is FAR better than the gut wrenching awfulness of 'At Worlds End', slightly better than the sterile and silly 'Dead Man's Chest' but still no where near as good or as fun as the original and still easily best 'Curse of the Black Pearl'. Oh well, at least 1 out of 4 ain't bad!
