Throughout the years, there are many types of horror movies. There are PG-13 horror movies, Japanese (or Korean) remakes, scary movies, and torture porn movies. The only thing I care to talk about today is torture porn films.
Torture porn: A horror film filled with mostly torture scenes, a lot of violence and gore, and sometimes nudity.
Audiences use to like this type of horror (Saw series, Wolf Creek, Hostel) but now, I think they're getting tired of them, including myself. The only torture porn films I would see are the Saw films. At least they have emotion in them. They show a perspective on the baddies and not just the goodies but I must admit, Saw III (although good) was tiring to watch. I didn't like to see another torture scene again. The constant yelling, the constant gore, and violence. I know what you might be thinking: Why do people go to see the Saw films? Well, maybe because these movies make you think. They're smart, unlike others.
This is a wake up call for horror film directors. Hostel II, The Hills Have Eyes 2, and The TCM: The Beginning made so much less in the box office than their first films. I'm afraid that the next torture porn film, Captivity, will also fall (although I must admit it looks promising).
It's time to move on to making scary movies, not movies that makes audiences gross out. It's like each studio tries to top each other off, bringing more gallons of blood and intestines. It's sick.
Still, there are some promising horror movies coming out this year: Trick R' Treat, 1408, The Mist, Halloween, and Cell.
