Plans underway to supersize the RT experience are fast winding their way to a web browser near you. At this auspicious stage of RT's development, I thought it would be fun to take a look back at where we've been (more on where we're going later).

Feast your eyes on this piece of RT history, circa 2000.

Eight years and a few thousand movies later, and we're still going strong. Thanks to all our users for their patronage, and stay tuned for more news related to our relaunch.

Its a nice sight. A lot of clout, a lot of recognition. Am glad you guys have done a terrific job rather than sell it off to someone not interested in the sight integrity but some commercial gain. Good job guys! Well done. Over all these years, yes since 2000, one of my most favorite sights on the net. Good show!

Certified Fresh Forecast: Little Miss Sunshine

    Posted on 07/26/06 06:28 PM | Last edited on 07/26/06 06:15 PM

    IN THEATERS

Little Miss Sunshine (Fox Searchlight), the independent comedy that brought critics to their feet at Sundance Festival 2006, arrives in theaters on July 26. Already at 93% on the Tomatometer with 33 reviews, Sunshine stars Greg Kinnear as an obsessive motivational speaker who heads a quirky family of thwarted individuals ? some might call them ?losers? ? on its way to a beauty pageant in California. The premise of the film is not entirely new: a semi-dysfunctional family piles into a jalopy and embarks on a road trip, where personal issues surface, collide, and are reconciled. But fueled by a perfectly-cast ensemble and newcomer Michael Arendt?s winning screenplay, Sunshine emerges as smart and charming comic fare that seems destined for Certified Fresh.

    ON DVD

Coming to DVD on July 25 is Somersault (Magnolia Pictures), a poignant coming-of-age drama that stars Abbie Cornish in her breakout performance. Following on August 1 is V for Vendetta (Warner Bros.), a visually stunning and thought-provoking action/adventure movie that stars Natalie Portman.

Certified Fresh Forecast: Once in a Lifetime

    Posted on 07/07/06 11:03 AM | Last edited on 07/07/06 11:02 AM

    IN THEATERS

With the U.S. team long eliminated from World Cup 2006, American soccer fans may finally realize catharsis in Once in a Lifetime: the Extraordinary Story of the New York Cosmos (Miramax). Paul Crowder and John Dower?s documentary opens, just in time, on July 7, to recall the inspirational rise and tragic downfall of American soccer in the 1970s. Narrator Matt Dillon joins former Cosmos and Warner Communications executives in reflecting upon why - after much investment and opening fanfare - the world?s most popular sport ultimately failed to capture American TV viewers, and consequently a U.S. athletic association. Clocking in at 90% with 10 reviews, Once in a Lifetime is not yet vying for Certified Fresh; but keep tuning in, as this soccer movie may yet surpass the fate of its fallen subject.

Meanwhile swagger and Sparrow again rule the Seven Seas in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man?s Chest (Buena Vista), the sequel to 2003?s Certified Fresh hit The Curse of the Black Pearl. Pirate Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and thwarted lovers Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) and Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) return this weekend for another round of swashbuckling fun. But the feisty cast, effervescent humor, and elegant CGI that last captivated audiences seems to run a bit overboard in this action-packed, 2 ½ hour extension of pirate lore. Currently at 55% with 85 reviews, Dead Man?s Chest has fluctuated wildly on the Tomatometer, but has likely buried its hopes for Certified Fresh until round 3 (slated for spring 2007).

    ON DVD

On DVD July 11 comes Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story (Picturehouse), an exuberant postmodern adaptation of Laurence Sterne?s unusual 18th-century novel. Also arriving, on July 18, is Tsotsi (Miramax), the Academy Award-winning South African film that tells the story of a shantytown teenager?s redemption.

Certified Fresh Forecast: For The Devil Wears Prada, Who Killed...

    Posted on 07/05/06 10:42 AM | Last edited on 07/05/06 10:38 AM

    IN THEATERS

Revving up the Tomatometer this week, at 85% with 30 reviews, is yet another electrifying movie about cars. But viewers beware: Chris Paine?s documentary Who Killed the Electric Car? (Sony Picture Classics) occupies a space far different from the frolicking, nostalgic world of Pixar animation. It emerges instead as a murder mystery that mourns the loss of electric vehicles while spewing blame at the whodunits: big oil, weak government, and wayward consumers. Coming off the heels of Al Gore?s documentary about global warming, Who Killed the Electric Car? presents one more bleak view of how today?s decisions may impact the future.

Meanwhile, haute couture lightens up with a newly Certified Fresh adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada (20th Century Fox) (77% with 109 reviews). Meryl Streep redeems an erstwhile clichéd plot through her portrayal of Miranda, the dictatorial editor of an influential fashion magazine, who terrorizes her dowdy new assistant Andy (Anne Hathaway). In an effort to advance her career, Andy undergoes a makeover in wardrobe and mindset. Fashion may be serious business, but The Devil makes it wickedly fun to watch.

    ON DVD

Coming to DVD next week is The Matador, a "humorously amoral, oddball comic thriller [that] features strong performances by Pierce Brosnan and Greg Kinnear.?

Following on July 11, filmmaker Marc Levin ?takes viewers on a personal journey? in Protocols of Zion, where he lays ?bare the ugly and varied faces of anti-Semitism.? Also arriving on July 11 is The Talent Given Us, an ?odd hybrid of reality and fiction [that nevertheless] works due to its engaging characters.?

Certified Fresh Forecast: Superman Returns, Wordplay

    Posted on 06/21/06 04:01 PM | Last edited on 06/21/06 03:59 PM

    IN THEATERS

The man of steel is back ? and this time betraying his softer side ? in Superman Returns (Warner Bros.), one of this summer?s most hotly anticipated action adventures. Director Bryan Singer?s sequel opens next Wednesday, but has already earned praise for its elegant use of CGI, appealing performance by newcomer Brandon Routh, and a script so attune to the myth it nearly waxes poetic. With early reviews bringing its Tomatometer to 100%, Superman Returns may well have begun its ascent toward Certified Fresh.

Among the films opening last week is Wordplay (IFC Films), a movie all about addiction, compulsion, and celebrity. Patrick Creadon?s lighthearted documentary about crosswords and word nerds, is gaining traction on the Tomatometer at 91% from 35 reviews. Critics are finding this down-to-earth portrayal of ?enigmatology? an ingeniously funny bit of entertainment, likely to delight more than just the 50 million Americans who pore over crosswords weekly. Featuring New York Times crossword aficionado, Will Shortz?along with former-president Bill Clinton, Yankee pitcher Mike Mussina, comedian Jon Stewart, and the Indigo Girls?Wordplay brings humor and smart animation into its exploration of crossword creation and puzzle-solving

    ON DVD

This week, Certified Fresh and Academy Award winning Syriana comes to DVD, still holding at 74% on the Tomatometer. Also on DVD are Certified Fresh thriller Cache at 87% and the documentary Why We Fight at 80%.

Certified Fresh Forecast: Cars, A Prairie Home Companion

    Posted on 06/13/06 02:40 PM | Last edited on 06/09/06 02:36 PM

    IN THEATERS

While not the smooth-riding masterpiece of its predecessors, Cars (Buena Vista) is sputtering its way to favor among critics. Fueled by visual pyrotechnics, a spunky cast and loyal fan base, the latest Pixar feature seems likely to emerge as one of the season?s best and the second animated movie to go Certified Fresh this year. At 72% on the Tomatometer (67% among Cream of the Crop critics), Cars revs up for hopefully another strong box office finish.

Not far behind comes A Prairie Home Companion (Picturehouse), reaching Certified Fresh status with 80 reviews and an overall 78% on the Tomatometer. Directed and produced by Robert Altman, A Prairie Home Companion draws its title and inspiration from the much-beloved public radio variety show created by Garrison Keillor. Thus far, Prairie?s talented cast conveys sufficient wit and verve for a winning reception.

    ON DVD

Dave Chapelle's Block Party (Rogue Pictures) arrives on DVD next Tuesday. One of the first Certified Fresh releases of the year, it's still standing tall at an amazing 93%.

Certified Fresh Forecast: An Inconvenient Truth, District B13

    Posted on 06/02/06 01:06 PM | Last edited on 06/06/09 09:48 AM

Can one man change the public’s perception of global warming? Al Gore’s new documentary directed by Davis Guggenheim and released by Paramount Classics may just provide the answer. As the title suggests, An Inconvenient Truth lays out the fears and myths surrounding the global warming debate. Based on early returns, critics and moviegoers are getting the message.

At 88% on the Tomatometer, meaning 88% of the nation’s top critics favorably reviewed the film, Rotten Tomatoes is proud to recognize An Inconvenient Truth as the Best Reviewed Documentary of the Year thus far. An Inconvenient Truth joins the ranks of recent Certified Fresh releases including United 93 and Why We Fight. At the box office, An Inconvenient Truth has earned equally impressive numbers, setting the record for highest per screen opening average with $91,827 (based on gross receipts of $367,311 at 4 theaters in NY and LA).

In its second week, An Inconvenient Truth continued to get top billing in the media, but it's not the only notable release. District B13 clocks in at 81% after 64 reviews. High-octane action takes front and center, more than carrying the formulaic premise/plot. Set in a futuristic Paris-gone-war zone, the stylized set pieces and kinetic editing will surely attract fans of Luc Besson, who's credited as a co-writer.

Certified Fresh Forecast: Over the Hedge

    Posted on 05/19/06 04:18 PM | Last edited on 05/19/06 04:17 PM

The past two days have produced a flurry of impassioned reviews and plenty of page views but alas no Certified Fresh titles. Blame/credit The Da Vinci Code for the strange turn of events that produced our single day traffic record according to Senh.

Unfortunately for Over the Hedge, this week's true contender for critical attention and Certified Fresh status, their counter-programming strategy may not give them enough momentum to survive the whiteout of publicity likely to surround The Da Vinci Code, X-Men 3, and Cars. Despite the competition, Over the Hedge pulled it off.

    And now for some afters...

Fans of realistic Westerns will be happy to learn John Hillcoat's The Proposition easily earned Certified Fresh status at 87%. Read RT's interview with John Hillcoat here.

    Certified Fresh Forecast: M:I:III

    Posted on 05/05/06 01:36 PM | Last edited on 05/05/06 01:35 PM

Some uneven storytelling couldn't hold back the summer's first blockbuster, Paramount's Mission: Impossible III, from Certified Fresh status. Yesterday, it made it across the 40 reviews / 75% goal line (so it will stay Certified Fresh unless it falls below 60%). Currently at 73%, this marks a solid outing for the former hit-TV-turned-film director, J.J. Abrams.

One to watch: The Proposition. Currently, at 91% and 32 reviews, Australian director John Hillcoat's Western drama features some solid performers (Guy Pearce) and unflinching storytelling. A few more reviews will probably take this into CF territory.

    Certified Fresh Forecast: Brick

    Posted on 04/10/06 05:15 PM | Last edited on 04/10/06 05:14 PM

Down but not out, Brick (Focus Features) stood at 74% after Friday's quote culling but managed to cross the Certified Fresh threshold over the weekend. At 75%, critics applaud its film noir credentials, giving this limited release a boost as it expands.

On the flipside, two films "not screened for critics" met with mixed results. Benchwarmers (Sony) made $20.5 million (second only to Ice Age!) while Phat Girlz (Fox Searchlight) took in $3.1 million. Go figure.
