Expertly made drama, and often compelling. Hits the occasional false note, and I still can't get over my dislike for Henry Fonda, but it's a film worth watching.

(DVD) (First Viewing, 2nd Herzog film)

Though it is often compared with Kubrick's THE SHINING, Werner Herzog's debut film SIGNS OF LIFE actually reminded me more of the first feature-length film of another Eastern European director: Roman Polanski's KNIFE IN THE WATER. Both films are preoccupied with the environment their characters inhabit, and in both cases the enormity and bleakness of the spaces they interact in become overwhelming and oppressive to the point it subverts the character's behavior beyond recognition. But while Polanski primarily explores this through endless expanses of water and sky, Herzog makes his examination even more abstract, to the point where the environment completely replaces the characters at the end of the film (much like Antonioni's L'ECLISSE), with only a monotone voice-over remaining to reference them and wrap up the story's explosive, highly-charged conclusion.

A beautifully austere film, almost intoxicating in its simplicity-- it really gets to you by the end.

Well, you (and Kevin) always make me feel like I need to be reading more, so I think we're about even! :)

This sounds awesome! I didn't know it was out on DVD, so I'll check it out soon if it's Netflixable.

Also, congratulations for being the only person in the last 30 years to start Herzog with The Land of Silence and Darkness and Signs of Life! :) I hope you get to Aguirre, but everything I've seen from him (with the exception of Heart of Glass) is worth seeing, so there's really no wrong direction to go next.

Well, it was a conspiracy between New Yorker Video and DVD Verdict that dictated that these would be the first! :)

Yeah, I know AGUIRRE is the biggie, so I'll have to get to that one sometime.

I assumed it was for DVD Verdict. I wonder how you'll feel about the Herzog/Kinski collaborations. I wouldn't be completely shocked if you liked his documentaries or the two features he did with Bruno S. more.

I should really stop trying to predict you since I'm usually wrong! :)

Wow, I've never heard of this... and I'm a huge Herzog and Knife on the Water fanboy (and an ex-Shining fanboy).

Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

You should love this then. Have you seen KNIFE IN THE WATER?

Yes I have. Not one of my favorite Polanski films... I liked it, but I think that I created such high expectations for it that it just didn't have a chance. A second viewing would probably fix that.

I see. I thought it had a bleak, melancholy vibe very similar to RIPLEY. Just that feeling of overwhelming dread lurking just beneath the surface.

I think that my problem was that I was actually expecting it to be very similar to Ripley, so I had such high expectations that I couldn't help but to be let down. I will probably give it another look. I think that the Criterion DVD also features Polanski's short films, so if for nothing else, I will be getting it again anyway.
