I'm not really sure what to think of Speed Racer after seeing it. The plot was too convoluted for its own good in spots, the dialogue was sometimes cheesey and gratuitous and the movie ran about 20 minutes too long. But the visuals were like nothing I have ever seen before and are done with such apparent joy that you can't help but marvel at them. It is quite stunning to look at despite getting somewhat repetitive.
This movie may be this generations Tron with its jaw dropping graphics. Also reminded me of the pod race in The Phantom Menace. As great as it sometimes looks, the movie never really delivers more than fancy visuals. But I did get caught up in its enthusiasm. Never has the term 'eye candy' been more appropriate. It looks so good initially and you really enjoy it, but you know later when you think about it, it's probably going to give you a stomach ache and leave you feeling empty. |
