So wait... can we seriously not change colors and stuff on our page now? Seriously?? Why would RT decide to REMOVE a feature?... I can't think of a single good reason for them to do such nonsense...

Uh... hi, guys. I can't even believe the shenanigans that Rotten Tomatoes has been up to. I don't even know why I'm posting again here, or if I'll even continue to post beyond this one. I just can't really comprehend how many things RT did wrong. I know I'm probably really late to comment on this, but when I first came here after the switch and saw the utter disaster that was RT, I retreated sadly and have stayed far away ever since.
I guess I figured it might be time to come back and give it another shot... but I really hate so much about it that I can't imagine it being anywhere near as fun as it once was. I might roam around more and figure it all out and decide to continue... or I might not. But either way, just wanted to let everybody know that I'm not dead (if anyone is still left on RT at this point). Everybody enjoy your coming weekend and maybe I'll check back in next week... |

I just posted my top 30 of 2008, officially now. I tried to narrow it down to 25, but it was too hard so I went for 30. I'm going to try to get reviews up as soon as possible for the remaining ones in the list that don't yet have links to the related review. Enjoy!

Very nice! I obviously have no issue with the majority of these. A few I apparently need to see. Can't wait for our next/real LTROI party! :) 0 Replies | Report Abuse Very nice! Okay, so I watched David Copperfield and Thunderpants, the double feature, last night. Didn't get all the way through Copperfield - stopped when Daniel Radcliffe's character morphs into his grown-up self at about the halfway mark of a 3 hour movie... So I don't feel like I can properly review Copperfield at this point, having not seen the second half. However, I had no trouble watching the full length of Thunderpants, coming in at just under 1.5 hours. Plus the deleted scenes. Yeah...
I mean, how do you rate an unrateable film? Because, really, Thunderpants is an oddity of filmmaking that can't be classified into a rating that would put it with the likes of... any other film. I'll just have to think about it over the weekend and leave you all hanging for the time being. I'm sure you are dying to read my review... I'm out of town this weekend at a film premiere, but I'll be back on Monday, hopefully to finish up reviewing the movies that are going to be making an appearance in my Top 30 (had to bump it up from Top 25 to make room for everybody)... coming soon! Oh, and for anyone who was on the edge of their seat awaiting the fabled part 2 of the letter F (best bands starting with F), you may just have to continue to hold on for longer than even I anticipated. F's second band's album was pushed back to May! I'm not a fan of that. Not a fan at all... |

So I'm a pretty on-and-off kind of friend to RT these days. I just moved though so maybe I'll be able to kick things up a notch now that my computer is fixed and things are getting set up at the new place? I'll be posting my official best of 2008 (SO darn late) in a week or two, and I have SO many movies to review it isn't even funny.
Random comment I need to make regarding Let the Right One In: did anyone else buy this movie yesterday, watch it with the subtitles, and start crying? They totally butchered them! If anyone happens to, by complete chance, own a UK version of the DVD, please, PLEASE let me know if your subs were the same as the theatre version, the RIGHT and REAL version. I would be much obliged because either way, I'll probably have to purchase a second copy of the UK version to satisfy myself... |

I was going to watch it today, how did the fudge with the subtitles? Is it just a scene or two or the whole film? 0 Replies | Report Abuse I'm a pretty huge fan of the movie and I saw it twice before the DVD came out, and I guess just because I love it so much I found that I had practically memorized the subs from before, so it was very noticeable to me. It's all throughout it though. They change what people say slightly in almost every scene. After getting frustrated with it, I turned the subs on with the English dubbed version and the dub is correct while the subs change what is being said in the dub for no apparent reason. 0 Replies | Report Abuse wow, that's really strange. I last saw it in November, so maybe I won't notice, but that doesn't sound good. There are tons of DVD's that are notorious for having terrible english-language subtitles, I just didn't know it would be a movie that would come out in 2008... 0 Replies | Report Abuse Yeah, it was really weird. I mean, I don't get why they changed them from the theatrical release. There isn't a UK version out yet, but I've heard that the Swedish version has English subtitles on the DVD and that they are much closer to correct. I may just have to buy a Swedish copy or wait for the UK version and see how those are... I was going to watch it today, how did the fudge with the subtitles? I mean, I personally think it would have been worth it to skip buying the US version in favor of a version with better subtitles; however, I haven't done a lot of research to find out if the other versions have all the features (deleted scenes and behind the scenes). I would say that if you can find a Swedish import that also has the features with subtitles or if you can find a UK version when that comes out, then yeah, that might be the better option. I know I'll be buying another copy once I do the research and find out which one is the best. 0 Replies | Report Abuse Uh-oh. The only line of dialogue that was obviously different was when Eli gets in bed with Oskar and says, "Is that yucky?" -- which was obviously changed from, "Is that gross?"... Other than that -- and you could probably chalk it up to the fact that I hadn't seen it in 5 months -- I didn't notice anything else. I HATE how the DVD defaults to an english dub. Over half the people who watch it on DVD won't even know that it's supposed to be in Swedish. They'll just be confused as to why the credits are hard to read. 0 Replies | Report Abuse Yeah, I agree about the default... I'll tell you two of the most noticeable changes to me... When Hakan (the old man who is with Eli) is in the shower and dumps the acid on his face, he clearly says "Eli..." but they changed it to "I'm trapped"!! I hate that so much. Makes no sense unless they are trying to sensor the fact that an old man says a little girl's name like that. Then, when Eli and Oskar are outside and Oskar asks how old Eli is, she says "About 12" but in the original subtitles she says "12, more or less" which is a much cooler way to say that. But yeah, that yucky thing got me real bad. I HATED that. That whole scene was changed actually. Oskar says "will you be my girlfriend" in the original, but not in the subtitles there. ARGH. 0 Replies | Report Abuse Okay, watched it last night. So, at the start of the new year, me and John came up with an idea for a weekly movie night which we'll call "New Director Night" where once a week, for one year, we watch a movie by a director who we have never before seen a movie by. We tried to pick directors from all over the world and to spread out the countries so we didn't lump all the Japanese ones into a month, for example. Each time we do this we'll eat or make some food from the country of origin.
However, as things often go, we didn't get started until just last night. It still remains to be seen if we'll try to catch up or just extend the year long idea into next February. To kick things off right, we watched Executive Koala last night. If you saw my post for The Wrestler a couple days ago, perhaps you clicked on the link I posted for the poster for The Calamari Wrestler, another film by the same director, Minoru Kawasaki. Let me tell you something. Executive Koala was the ONLY way to start off such an endeavor. So, look forward to my review of that (though we didn't eat or make any Japanese food, so it looks like we have still failed in one respect... and on the first day!), and hopefully, if all goes well from here on out, you can expect to see a "New Director Night" film on my RT once a week or so. |

NEW THINGS!
I have a new layout, a new sticky entry photo, a new addition to my top ten movies ever (I really couldn't help myself), and you seriously need to check out the photos for Jean-Pierre Jeunet's (Amelie, City of Lost Children) new movie, "Micmacs a Tire Larigot". You can find a link to that at the bottom of my sticky entry. Have at it. |

Let the freakin right one in! Yeah! Also, micmacs should be fantastic. 0 Replies | Report Abuse Yay! I pretty much want to watch LTROI every single day. Can't. wait. for Micmacs. 0 Replies | Report Abuse We should have a Jeunet party sometime... Delicatessen, City of Lost Children, Amelie, A Very Long Engagement... 0 Replies | Report Abuse We can have it after the Malle party which needs to happen like...tomorrow. I've got Deli on my queue BTW, only one of J's that I've not seen. 0 Replies | Report Abuse Let the freakin right one in! Yeah! Also, micmacs should be fantastic. 2 Replies | Report Abuse Yay! ![]() I can't believe my eyes... Not only is that a freaking amazing poster, it's also... I mean, you have to just see it... '9' trailer Wow. Really, that is the best trailer I have seen since HP6. That's really REALLY saying something. I. Can't. Wait. To. See. 9. AHHH!! I saw the fantastic short film a few years ago when it was up for an Oscar. It was the best one I saw in the 'best short film' category that year. So naturally, a feature-length version of that masterpiece is much anticipated. |

F's entry is extra special. Two bands top my list for F and I really couldn't have just listed one of them. They both fill spots in my best bands ever list so I figured I'd write about both of them in two super mega entries. Are you ready? Okay! Here's the first...
FRIGHTENED RABBIT ![]() Today I've re-designed my RT in honor of Frightened Rabbit. As Will Ferrel would say, FR is "so hot right now." Here's the album cover from their latest work of musical art which is what I based the color scheme on: ![]() The band is made up of Scott, lead vocals + guitar (from Scotland! heh); Grant, vocals + drums (Scott's brother); and Billy, guitar + keyboards + bass. And apparently, a recent addition to the band was made in the form of a guy named Andy who plays guitar + keyboards + bass. I suppose it was a bit rough on Billy trying to jump between three instruments. I was wondering how he managed such a feat before I discovered the likes of Andy. Their sound is kind of indescribable to me, but Wikipedia has them labeled as simply "indie rock" which doesn't quite cover it. Add the word "folk" in there somewhere and you are getting close. While their first album, "Sing the Greys", has some excellent tunes throughout, it doesn't quite compare to "Midnight Organ Fight", their latest and best album yet. ![]() Just today I discovered something wonderful. They are re-touring very briefly (5 shows only so far) in the US, which means, with a fair amount of car time, I can see them live in January! I'm sure you would want to as well if you knew who they were... so if you don't, get ready... here comes the gold... Apparently, no video exists yet for my favorite FR track, so here it is, music only: The Modern Leper And this fantastic live version from a show they did in Cleveland last spring: The Modern Leper (Live) If you want some video action mixed with your indie folk rock, here THAT is: Head Rolls Off Those are some darn lucky kids. I love how some of them are REAL into it and others just seem incredibly confused. The kid-made FR drawings at the end are classy though. And now, for some very endearing live talk plus a live version of "Good Arms vs. Bad Arms": Good Arms vs. Bad Arms Live ![]() Oh, and just in time for the holiday season, here is this odd but lovely little song conducted and written by the band for... some unknown reason... Christmas with the Rabbits In case you are real into this band at this point (and who wouldn't be), here's the recorded official version of this song for all your Christmas mix tapes: It's Christmas So We'll Stop (Choir Version) It's Christmas So We'll Stop (FR Version) Well, now that you have some new favorite songs to listen to on loop, here's what you should go and do whilst listening: ![]() I hope you enjoyed that little bit about the fantastic letter F. See you next time! Get your Fs ready... for round 2! |

Um, so that FR live video was pretty much the best Christmas present one could ask for. We are SO seeing them in Washington, DC. Like...really. Ok? Can we get tickets yet? 0 Replies | Report Abuse Yeah, we're going! More talk of this adventure tonight... 0 Replies | Report Abuse Um, so that FR live video was pretty much the best Christmas present one could ask for. We are SO seeing them in Washington, DC. Today, in the interest of getting to a special feature musical review which will be posted next, I'm throwing up two of these bad boys for your pleasure. E comes before F, naturally, so here we go...
![]() Enon is kind of a treat of a band. They are catchy, their songs are fairly short and are characterized by bursts of pop style energy and a combination of sugary female vocals and punk-ish guy vocals, and most importantly, they have some killer tracks on their new album, "Grass Geyers... Carbon Clouds". One of said "killer tracks" made it to my "song of the month" album from 2008. Take a listen here and watch the video while you are at it: Dr. Freeze Fun, right? I just know you are dying for more... ![]() Mr. Ratatatat And there you have it. I hope you enjoyed that little bit about the fantastic letter E. See you next time! Get your Fs ready!
