Occasionally thrilling, though more often just baffling. 'Ichi' sees director Miike at his most inventive and free wheeling. However, lacking relatable characters, a sturdy plot structure, or realistic circumstances (Miike films often take place in a twisted version of our own universe), the whole affair comes off as a blood-soaked muddle. If there's a point to any of it, it's lost. 'Ichi' still works as a series of crazy sequences strung together, if not quite as a whole.
