For something that's essentially Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling shooting gangsters, while Sean Penn yells a lot, 'Gangster Squad' isn't all that much fun. What went wrong? Leave it to a rotten script to ruin the fact that the movie gets so much else right.
'Gangster Squad' can't seem to decide whether it wants to be taken seriously, or be an over-the-top self conscious comedy-thing. It tries both and fails. There's an abundance of crappy lines that might have been funny in the right context, with the right tone, but not here. Here it's just embarrassing. Worse, the entire movie seems to be made up of cliches. Not just one or two now and again, but the entire thing. One on top of the other. It's more predictable than 'Avatar'. And don't even get me started on the puns.
Everything else is pretty okay. There's not much flair to the camerawork, though everything looks glossy enough. Casting is good. Gosling talks with a weird high voice and somehow it's awesome. Brolin plays a boring character straight. Penn yells a lot and ends up killing more of his own men than the heroes do.
