Good review. My current review is incomplete and I've been meaning to rewrite it for awhile. I've got just about everything in my head but need to watch the movie again to answer a few more questions. I think you'll really like it when I do it. 0 Replies | Report Abuse Wow dude, you dug out one of my old ones! It was great to re-read this after so long. This movie absolutely captivated me, both emotionally and intellectually. A masterpiece, or very nearly one. I was so happy this beat Pans Labyrinth for the Oscar, although I thought PL was very special too. 0 Replies | Report Abuse |

The poster did nothing to draw me in, but the vampire line did. Sounds allot more grounded in reality than most of the dramas I see. Ranging from the odd like "Tetsuo the Iron Man" or downright awful Pia Zadora's "Butterfly". Only seen Judi Dench on the Bond series so am curious to see her in this. I like reading your old reviews. Certainly good stuff. Better than my old writing. 0 Replies | Report Abuse |

Wow, sounds pretty mind-blowing to me. I'll have to see this one, unfortunately I'll probably have to wait until DVD. Looking forward to watching it. :) 1 Replies | Report Abuse This and "Southland Tales" are the only seriously highbrow films of the fall season, it seems to me. In fact, they might be the only ones for the entire year. I'd love to hear what you think of this one, as well as "Southland." I'm delighted that you honed in on these two reviews when you perused my journal. It shows what an eye for serious art you have. 0 Replies | Report Abuse Superb review! I really need to see this movie now. Ever get around to seeing the Three Colors Trilogy? 1 Replies | Report Abuse No, man, I havent. I don't own a TV or DVD player, so I have no capability to rent stuff on my own. I have to watch stuff at the homes of friends and family. I'll be spending quite a bit of time at my parents' house over Xmas. I'll see if I can find the dvd's in the local Blockbuster. I'd really like to check them out, based on your recommendation. 0 Replies | Report Abuse |

I can not wait to see this. Is it going to be in wide release? 1 Replies | Report Abuse This movie is getting such great buzz that I'm quite certain it will be in wide release. Plus there's the fact that Summit is the distributor. Summit always does wide releases. So you'll probably get the opportunity to see it on a big screen. 1 Replies | Report Abuse Alright, thanks for the info. Good review. 0 Replies | Report Abuse |

I'm so looking forward to this, though I won't get to 'til February. I think it will be worth the wait. 1 Replies | Report Abuse Hope it moves you. Lord knows we've been disagreeing on most films lately! This is a defining film for me, in the sense that it pretty well defines my artistic taste. If we disagree on this one too, then it's official that we've become very artistically different. 0 Replies | Report Abuse hellz yea 0 Replies | Report Abuse |

Wow! I have never even heard of this, but your review has me incredibly intrigued. I will have to seek this one out - sounds like a truly unique movie. 1 Replies | Report Abuse This was a real dazzler for me and for a lot of other people. I'm sure it will be available on DVD at some point. Because AW operates at such a high intellectual level, his films get almost no distribution in the US. Strand Releasing did the US distro of "Boonmee," and Strand can't even afford to do marketing. It's outrageous that even after winning Cannes he still cannot get an American distributor with an ad budget. 0 Replies | Report Abuse The only Golden Palm winner from the last decade that I haven't seen! I'm glad you liked it 1 Replies | Report Abuse Wow, that is impressive that you've seen all the recent Cannes winners. Do you consciously strive to watch each winner? That's amazing that you even find out what film wins. I don't know a single other person who even notices what films and actors win at Cannes. Have you seen any of Weerasethakul's stuff? He's one of my fave living directors. I think he's a true genius. 1 Replies | Report Abuse Unfourtenly that's the only Weerasethakul movie I know. But now that I have free time I'll try to know him better. And yes, I'm obessed with Golden Palm winners. My goal is to watch all of them. But some are really hard to find. 1 Replies | Report Abuse |

I'm seeing it in 3 hours. This is easily my most anticipated film of the year, Bill. 1 Replies | Report Abuse I can't wait to get some time to write more about it. I saw your review and see that you loved it as well. I feel like I want to rush back to the theater and see it again. 1 Replies | Report Abuse I could have written so much more. Have you seen any of Refn's other films? Tom Hardy gave a compelling performance in Bronson, a film I thought was just ok. I started watching Valhalla Rising late one night and plan on finishing it soon. It is a challenging and polarizing film. Like Drive, it's atmospheric and there's not very much dialogue. There are a few other films I'm really excited about and one of them is Shame. It's directed by Steve McQueen (Hunger) and stars Michael Fassbender and 3 Replies | Report Abuse Carrey Mulligan. Fassbender plays a sex addict and it takes place in New York City. Here is a clip (no trailer yet) if you are interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apy4-h_aC0s I have not seen any of Refn's films. I've actually never heard of him until this. But I'm eager to see all of them now. I'm also excited about "Shame," although I'm growing weary of all the discussion in the press of how much nudity Fassbender does. I can't believe the number of critics who keep putting that prominently in their articles. I'm excited about "Shame" for other reasons, like the story and the intensity of the filmmaking and acting. I watched that clip: intense. (Odd thought: I've ha I agree with you but it won't win Best Picture. 1 Replies | Report Abuse I think it's got a damn good shot at Best Picture. It certainly has no other competition so far this year. Would you agree? But the late fall may bring on some competition. It's certainly a contender though, no? 2 Replies | Report Abuse Yeah, maybe a contender but "Drive" is not the kind of movie that usually win Best Picture...I think that Moneyball, The Carnage, Ides of March, The Descendants and A Dangerous Method(maybe even War Horse) have more shots... 1 Replies | Report Abuse Interesting. Did you think "No Country for Old Men" would win? 'Hurt Locker"? "The Departed"? I think "Drive" is right up that alley. Violence and noir are very popular with Oscar voters right now, it looks like to me. I don't think the old-fashioned adult drama is as popular with Oscar voters anymore. (Replying to your last comment)Yeah..The Academy is changing. But when I think about "Drive", I don't see it as an Oscar winner, I see it as a cult movie like Pulp Fiction. I'm not sure if Pulp Fiction would be what Pulp Fiction is today if it had won Best Picture.. 0 Replies | Report Abuse Awesome description. I scored it 100% and named it my 2nd favorite film of the year thus far. A fan of "The Hours" are you? Loved that one too. Well done, this will surely get noms for Best Pic and Director (hopefully cinematography and musical score, too). 0 Replies | Report Abuse i guess this picture is my "The Artist", everyone seams to love it but me..... don't get me wrong i enjoyed it very much.... but the film never seemed to live up to it's ridiculously awesome opening and i felt slightly disappointed that it turned into a gangster pic (albeit a unique one) instead of a art-house take on car chases and what not..i mean theres not much driving in the thing.... but i did love it's infectious style... 1 Replies | Report Abuse It does seem that this film left a lot of people cold. The complete lack of Oscar nominations is a testament to that. Another example of that mysteriously subjective thing known as artistic appreciation. 0 Replies | Report Abuse Love all the comparisons you did, esp. the one with Mulholland Drive's atmosphere. Such a refreshing movie and I'll be supporting your prediction too. Great review. 1 Replies | Report Abuse Which prediction? 1 Replies | Report Abuse ""Drive" will also become a classic film watched over and over for decades." :D 1 Replies | Report Abuse |

This one has been flying under the radar. I had not heard of it until I read your review, which is surprising since there are three big name actors and I have not seen a single promo. Thank you for the recommendation. 1 Replies | Report Abuse I'm surprised at how under-the-radar this has been, given the big names and the stellar quality. I don't know why an outfit like Sony Pictures Classics didn't pick this one up. At least then there would have been a marketing budget. The advertising in NYC has been minuscule, but there has been some. 0 Replies | Report Abuse Philip Seymor Hoffman is just one of those actors for me. He makes every movie worth waching. Hope I'll be able to find this somehow. 1 Replies | Report Abuse This film is being distributed by a company with little to no money for advertising or PR, and critics aren't all going crazy with raves, so I'm not sure if this film is going to get the audience it deserves. A tragic shame. 0 Replies | Report Abuse |

I'm waching Altman oeuvre chronologically and this one is slowly approaching.. Have you seen Altman's McCabe & Mrs.Miller? If I had to choose one favourite film of all time, it would probably be that one. 1 Replies | Report Abuse You're watching the entire Altman oeuvre? Wow, what a fantastic project. Wish I could join you for some of the screenings. Altman has never been one of my favorites. I find his soft, laid-back style a bit irritating. My style is tougher and tighter. He's more of a hippie, and I'm more of a punk rocker, you could say. : ) But I'm beginning to appreciate him more. Have not seen 'McCabe' but very eager to. 1 Replies | Report Abuse Quentin Tarantino has mentioned McCabe is one of his fav Altman films. 1 Replies | Report Abuse |

Harmony Korine is a terrible director. I enjoyed "Kids", and thats where he sould have stayed as a screenwriter. He makes these weird for the sake of being weird movies as if they are supposed to shock me, they dont. I think if he would have stayed a screenwriter and tried to perfect that instead of directing he would have been much better off. Does he want me to feel bad for these kids?, he shows this plotless story and offers no real explanation for their behavior. They are lower class and liv 0 Replies | Report Abuse Great review. Spring Breakers got me interested in Harmony Korine. I'm not quite sure what to expect from any of his films, but they all sound absolutely fascinating to me. 0 Replies | Report Abuse |

Wow, that's a long time! I guess it had to be good after all that waiting! :) 1 Replies | Report Abuse It was not a disappointment. And there are many other movies on my 20-year list. Griffith's 'Intolerance' for starters. Still haven't seen it! And I've still never seen a Charlie Chaplin film! 1 Replies | Report Abuse I've seen Intolerance, but still have to see Birth of a Nation, or something by Renoir for example! 1 Replies | Report Abuse I never saw 'Birth' either. But I just bumped it up to the top of my netflix queue and it's on the way to my house! Thank you for helping to encourage me. My engagement with silent films is almost nil, which makes me feel pathetic. I've seen only one Renoir film. I thought it was just OK. Have you seen much Godard? I've always thought I should see more of his films. I'm such a loser! Don't worry, I'm just a little better than you when it comes to silent films.. As for Godard, I know people who describe his cinema as style over substance, but I'm not one of them (I'm talking about his sixties stuff, because I haven't gone beyond that). You can't separate those two when it comes to him. I like him better than Truffaut, and My Life to Live is one of my all time favorites! 1 Replies | Report Abuse I've never seen 'My Life to Live'. How did you first see it? Did you rent it on your own? In a film class? Do you know about the new book on Godard called 'Everything is Cinema'? I've read it -- didn't love it. 'Birth of a Nation' arrived at my apartment today. I can't wait to see it. 1 Replies | Report Abuse I rented it. It was at a time when I started to get interested in "serious" cinema, and that was actually one of the few that converted me. No, I haven't read anything about him, just seen couple of documentaries. I don't find him that interesting as a person. Let me know what you think about Birth, I know it has a reputation of being one of the most controversial films ever! Speaking of silents, I've just seen Nosferatu for the first time couple of days ago and liked it very much. 0 Replies | Report Abuse |

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly was inventive, stylish and emotionally engaging. It was one of my favorite films of 2007. I agree with you on Bardem. 1 Replies | Report Abuse I thought Diving Bell was good but a little thin on story. I actually thought that was one of the weaknesses of Before Night as well. The central story was a bit simple. But overall, I would rank Before Night as superior to Diving Bell. 0 Replies | Report Abuse |

i'v only seen the marlon brando version, which leaves a lot to be desired, so heres my question, is this version good enough to warrant a watch even though im familiar with the story.? 1 Replies | Report Abuse It's really hard for me to help people make personal viewing decisions, given that everyone is very different in their film taste. I don't know what kinds of artistic issues are paramount to you. I would not describe this as a must-see for anybody. But those who love 1930s movies will surely enjoy themselves with this, especially fans of Gable and Laughton. 1 Replies | Report Abuse well your review was highly positive, so i guess ill just check it out anyways 0 Replies | Report Abuse |
