Cool, I remember when they first hit it big back in '89 - 90. Everyone thought they were just another Cocteau Twins clone. They're cover of "Wild Horses" is pretty great too, a staple of romantic comedies the world over.

I liked CQ. I thought it was clever and different. However, I DID smoke a joint before I watched it. I will try to track down The Innocents. It sounds like good shit. Is it like Turn of the Screw, at all? Or Night of the Hunter?

If I can step in here a moment, "The Innocents" is actually an adaptation of the Henry James novella, "The Turning of the Screw." I'm no fan of James' literary style, so my preference, at the moment, is for the film version.

Then you should have a separate rating system for movies in which you blaze up beforehand. If not that, at least use an asterisk.

Do you insist everyone use an asterisk if they had a few beers before watching a movie? How about a Xanax? How about some caffeine? What if someone is in a really bad mood when they watch a film? Should they use an asterisk then?

Bad mood asterisks? Now you're talking crazy. I was thinking of just alcohol, marijuana, hashish, tryptophan and horse tranquillizers.

Thanks for the mention, Yum-Yum. I'm glad you enjoyed "The Innocents" as much as I did. When I give a film a glowing 10/10 recommendation, I'm always a bit wary that others might not like it as much as I did (or that I oversold it, due to my natural exuberance for film). Glad that didn't happen here. Wish there was something we could do to get it released on DVD.

Nah, you didn't over sell it one bit. :) Yeah, I was suprised to learn that The Innocents wasn't on DVD. The version I taped off PBS looked pretty good - being widescreen and all, but a DVD would still be nice.

Yes, at least PBS was smart enough to show it widescreen. It would have been criminal to show "The Innocents" panned and scanned (it'd really undercut the all-important mood created by Freddie Francis' cinematography). AND, I'm glad I didn't oversell it after all. Fans of haunted house movies need to see this film and soon.

Deborah Kerr had a lot of screen presence and always very classy. This one also has a bit in common with Legend of Hell House, my personal fav Old Creepy Movie.

"Legend of Hell House" Cool, I'll keep an eye out for that one. Great title. I believe this was the second time Kerr's played a governess. She played one opposite Haley Miles in The Chalk Garden from the mid-60s. Anyway, she's a class act, indeed.

I still think that one of Steven Spielberg's greatest directorial achievements was getting an amazing performance out of Jeremy Davies in Saving Private Ryan. He was good in Spanking the Monkey, but he tore me up in SPR. His other performances have been "meh," especially his Chuck Manson imitation in that CBS miniseries. Haven't seen CQ, but my mod ex-boyfriend dug it. OH MY GOD I LOVE THE BONUS TRACKS!!! Especially these... #77 -- B-Movie - Nowhere Girl (1984) #78 -- The Cure - A Forest (1980) #79 -- Buzzcocks - What Do I Get? (1979) #84 -- Martha and the Muffins - Echo Beach (1980) #86 -- Curve - Faît Accompli (1990) #87 -- Killing Joke - Love Like Blood (1985) #90 -- Trans-X - Living On Video (1984) #92 -- Q-Feel - Dancing In Heaven (Orbital Be-Bop) (1983)

Yeah, I can see mods digging CQ. The whole retro appeal. You know, being set in 1969 and all. Jeremy Davies needs to pick up the pace a bit, I recall him doing the same thing in Secretary. I'm glad you love the bonus tracks. Hee Hee. You know Q-Feel. :fresh: "Slow, slow, quick quick, slow..." :) Trans-X would've been in the top 10 of my recent Canadian '80s list, but alas, I didn't know they were Canadian at the time.

OMG I love this list! You brought me back to the college days and right after when the local college radio station played the best music! Now it's off-air most of the time and when it's not, it's death metal or rap. The deejays haven't changed a bit, though, they still sound as if they're about to fall asleep. I have to read the rest of your journal, too. What I've read so far, I've loved.
