★★ (out of four)
Certainly a lot of detailed work and time went into this production. Unfortunately the script is unable to flesh out its characters enough. They ae blandness against a beautiful backdrop. After awhile one wishes to just sit back and watch the scenery while forgetting about the plot.
Robert Pattinson playes Georges Duroy, a wanderer who moves from place to place in 1890's Paris. He latches on to several women, both rich and poor, using his powers of seduction. His goalis to use them to move up in French society.
Pattinson tries his best to be like Richard Gere in "American Gigolo", Montgomery Clift in "The Heiress" and Warren Beatty in Shampoo", but he is not in the same league. He is barely believable in the role.
Another issue is that the women in the movie really have nothing to gain by being with him. The film never shows us what they find so appealing about Duroy.
