The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945)

For a film like this, based on a respected novel, so much hangs in the performance of Dorian Gray. Most everything works in the picture except that. Wonderful atmosphere adds to the story of a young man who remains young and handsome while those around him grow older. Only his portrait reveals the truth nature of his soul. Well shot and acted by George Sanders, Donna Reed and Angela Lansbury. However, Hurd Hatfield was so miscast that it ruined the entire movie for me. He did act the part. He didn't look the part. Poor Oscar Wilde would have been furious with what they did to his chracater. |
