*** (out of four)

Comedic and energetic retelling of the Alexandre Dumas novel is wonderfully shot and features many spirited action and swordplaying scenes.

Despite the great filmmaking, the film almost sinks underneath Gene Kelly's over-the-top hammy performance. He never has been a subtle actor. A little bit goes a long way.
