This "great film" I don't remember seeing before, but it's easy to have forgotten--maybe I saw it 20 years ago in some strange film class. Just sat through it, and was really surprised!
Yikes! SuspenseLess, Cliched isn't the word even for 1946. Couldn't believe it. I sat through this?
Cary Grant & Bergman create as much juice as a couple of dead trees. Ben Hecht's dialogue is beyond get the hook. Alfred Hitchcock--after this one they should have shipped him back to England and locked the gates--gee, the camera's in bed and Cary's upside down. oh wow. Zoom in on the cup of coffee...there it is again, and then AGAIN; cut to central casting Nazi mom. Oh, I get it...ya think she put something in it?
Had forgotten how really bad Cary Grant was in this farce--hair still as plaster on a 20 story terrace (bad pic of Rio skyline in background) even though he wasn't given much to say; ditto Bergman, though the camera swoons over her face as if to say who cares about the stupid story--but that just makes things worse.
Can't believe Criterion would waste all the plastic for this one.
Oh well, better luck on the next "Great" (95% on the tomato meter) film.
