Finally done with my damn digital final!

    Posted on 05/09/04 02:44 AM | Last edited on 05/09/04 02:43 AM

Hey all. If you have read my journal, you know that my digital class is my big thing right now. Well, right now, it's five in the morning, on a Sunday, and I pulled a 12-hour stint finishing it up, but the motherfucker's done.

    G'night.

    Questioning Life, Turning in Finals

    Posted on 05/06/04 08:14 PM | Last edited on 05/06/04 08:07 PM

Turned in my first final today. I thought I did a good job for writing most of it while tipsy off White Russians and Smirnoffs last night. I looked over it today and added a bit and revised. Gotta do a five-pager before I go to bed tonight. Will that happen? Only time (and my resistance to the allure of RT) will tell.

Meanwhile, I'm starting to question where I'm going after college. I have some basic ideas for what I'd like to do in cinema (concept design and animatics are chief among them), but I'm not sure on how to begin. I know I want to make a short film this summer, but I don't like any of my ideas. Additionally, I'm worried that my lack of an internship will throw off my chances for getting higher-end jobs in the field.

Argh. And my digital final is pissing me off, mostly because I lost a SHITLOAD of time this weekend when the computer wouldn't work. Those ten or so hours can really make or break a project.

And reading about love lives and what have you on the Axis thread has got me all bothered, mostly because I haven't actively been seeking out women for a few years. Not because I'm terrified of them (although I am), but moreso because I'm too busy doing other stuff, as well as a goal I made - to make peace with who I am before I go after someone else. I think I've gotten closer in that goal. I haven't had a happier time in all my life, mostly because I've been approaching life with more gratitude and appreciation. All the same, I desperately want to connect with a woman. I don't even care about sex (although, as a fringe benefit, it can't be beat). I just wonder if I'm missing out on a grand opportunity right now. The college years. The times when people find their loved ones. And here I am, studying and working on schoolwork constantly, posting on RT, hanging out with my guy friends, and mostly keeping to myself.

Argh. I need to work on that paper.

    Correction: Thrilled about Wages!

    Posted on 04/29/04 11:27 PM | Last edited on 04/29/04 11:24 PM

I managed to finally scope it out this afternoon (and the final half hour this evening). What a terrific flick! The film's subtle racial undertones are perfectly complemented by the endless suspense. The premise is so perfect we should all be slapping our heads.

There are at least three or four set-pieces of outstanding suspense in that film, but I wouldn't dare ruin the surprises of this film. Aside from overacting from a few minor characters, and an ending I didn't much care for (though I'll probably appreciate more in retrospect), it's simply a grand thriller, and a great film.

My favorite character was Luigi, but the most fascinating was probably Jo.

Indeed, indeed. Your comments, of course, are dead on. I also had some problems with the ending, but I'll leave it at that. Looks like I'll have to revisit it soon (I was lucky enough to catch it at the local arthouse theater, pristine print, great viewing experience).

Very cool that you saw it on a big screen. I saw it on a relatively small TV, and it was still simply grand.

Pissed about Wages, Starting to Freak Out Over Finals

    Posted on 04/29/04 12:05 AM | Last edited on 04/28/04 11:59 PM

Argh. I'm in denial. I did jack shit for homework today, and next week I got three final papers. Bugger. Also, my digital animation project is gonna be a tight scrape. I pray I get it done as I want it, but I keep adjusting the characters, instead of logging motion.

In fact, I've been dinking around so much that I won't be able to watch Wages, because I'm busy all of tomorrow, and it's due tomorrow night. So I gotta return it. Goddamnit! I really wanted to see this one - the premise sounded so cool. Maybe I'll find some time after finals, before I leave. That would be a serious treat.

What else? . . . nuthing. Battle of Posters is going on right now (Vote DaMU!), but that's not holding the thrill it did last time. Maybe I found enough of a niche here that my self-esteem doesn't hinge on the outcome of an online mesage board competition. Not that I ever put much stock in it anyway - ultimately a silly diversion, although it's a lot of fun, too.

Also, I haven't been seeing much of any X-Files in the past few days, which sucks, cuz I was really getting back into it the past couple of weeks. Bah! BAH!

But I can't really complain, cause things are going well overall, and I got drunk on Saturday night. Yeah beer.

I saw that. Very cool. I remember my first match last year was a washout. Also, I'm glad that LTZ has gotten so many votes, cause he's damn cool. It'd be fun if he overtook me. I'm a fan of the jack and coke, and vodka shots are always fun. I don't have much experience with drinking - it's more of an occasional thing for me.

    Killing Bill and Gearing Up

    Posted on 04/21/04 12:28 PM | Last edited on 04/21/04 12:25 PM

Watched Kill Bill on Monday night, with some friends who hadn't seen it. They both really enjoyed it. We may see Volume 2 tonight, or not.

Apart from that, starting to prep myself up for the long haul, now that the semester's drawing to a close. Finals and all that. Two digital animation projects, three big papers, finals, you know. It seems like teachers enjoy this sadistic style of teaching - two or three months of calm, then two weeks of repetitive bitch-slaps.

Ah well. Watched Big Lebowski a few nights ago, laughed my rear off. I love that movie, and, damn, it's just still so funny.

Good DVD deal, a test dogfight, and Ho-Tep tonight!

    Posted on 04/17/04 04:26 PM | Last edited on 04/17/04 04:23 PM

First off, I just got back from Sam Goody with two DVD's - Requiem for a Dream and Big Lebowski. Love both, glad to add them to my collection. The sweetest part is the total was eighteen bucks. Not a bad price at all.

Worked with my digital animation some more today. I did a test dogfight with two ships weaving in and out of old ruins today. I think it looks fricking amazing, but that's probably due to a sense of accomplishment, rather than any real merit.

Finally, seeing Ho-Tep tonight, so, hey, come on. That's worth saying.

    Finishing Metropolis; Bubba's coming up!

    Posted on 04/13/04 01:48 PM | Last edited on 04/13/04 01:44 PM

For my d-animation class, I'm working on two projects right now: a lame After Effects assignment (boo!), and the final project, which should be boss! I'm storyboarding it out right now, and I'm mostly done figuring out the architecture of the buildings. Think futuristic ancient ruins (huh?).

Halfway through Metropolis (fell asleep). I don't think my sleepiness helped with the whole plot thang, but the movie itself is just splendiferous. The animation is simply astounding, and the character animation is remarkably smooth and differentiated among the peeps. Very fun stuff.

Also, Bubba Ho-Tep'll be here in two days! TWO FRICKING DAYS! ARGH! I've been waiting for this for over a year, and I'm glad I'll get a chance to see it on a bigger screen.

Anything else? . . . Oh yeah. Did a new style for the journal. Drop me a line, tell me what you think. I like it a lot more.

D-animation a Done Deal; Metropolis tonight?

    Posted on 04/11/04 06:59 PM | Last edited on 04/11/04 06:54 PM

In my digital animation class, I turned in my animation of a Lovecrafty beastie trying to scale a building, but then it turns to see the camera and goes after it. I am incredibly proud of it, as I modeled everything myself and didn't import pre-made objects (you can just find skeletons or people or buildings on the internet or in the file list). CGI architecture is really fun, and pretty damned interesting, but the bigger fun was making the creature move. I modeled its walk pattern after an elephant, trying to even get little head and tail movements in. The result is crude, but it's one of my proudest achievements in college.

I'm hella excited for the final, where I'll be working with one minute instead of twenty seconds. Should be awesome if it goes as planned.

In other news, I'm finally gonna try and watch the anime Metropolis tonight. I renewed it last week, but I couldn't find the time, then I turned it back in, checked it out again, and renewed it once more tonight. Dammit, I wanna see this!

Also, Happy Bunny Day. My family came to visit the past two days, and my mom, so full of plans and outings, completely forgot that whole church thang.

    A few rentals . . .

Got three flicks: the anime Metropolis, the Kurosawa classic Rashomon, and Burton's first, Pee Wee's Big Adventure.

Got through Pee Wee. ***/****. Silliness that is tedious at its worst, vastly entertaining at its best. The film itself is uneven, but the light sense of mirth, bookended by Burton's already-developing style, make it a small delight.

    Bubba Ho-Tep and Cthulhu

    Posted on 03/31/04 04:35 PM | Last edited on 03/31/04 04:32 PM

. . . is gonna be in town in a few weeks. Score. I learned this from my friend Chris's girlfriend, the head of our student-run theater. When she told me, I squawked like a parrot. I think I worried her, but, c'mon, I'm a movie geek, and nothing's more appealing to a geek than Bruce Campbell as Elvis in a flick about a mummy.

In other news, the only class I care about anymore is my Digital Animation one, and it rawks the body that rawks the party. Especially cool is the 3D software. Right now I'm working on a twenty second animation "flyby", and, being me, I figured a Lovecraftian beast attempting to scale a building would be cool.

    That's all for now.
