I used to love this genre and would run to the theatre every time a movie like this came out. But in the last few years, I have been unimpressed with the genre. So I was reluctant to go see "Mama". But frankly, I was intrigued that Jessica Chastain decided to do this movie which is rather risky in the same timeframe that she is nominated for an Oscar for "Zero Dark Thirty". Sometimes the Academy gets turned off by these types of performances. But this movie was well written, excellently acted and directed. It even had a vibe of a 1940's horror movie. I strongly recommend it.
