What could be worse than Superman III? Not Superman IV, of course! Well, in reality most people think so, but it's not true. Not until I bought the Superman Ultimate Collector's Boxset, I don't have a memory of me having watch (or at least remember) either Superman III or IV.

But let's start a little bit about SIII. Wasn't it a good story? Yeah, for the 80s. Talking about this 'super' computers and this 'laser guns' and all this stuff...oh, well, the 80s...I was born there...Let's talk good about the movie. It has Christopher Reeves, Lana Lang, Smallville(!), and red kryptonite...and again with the bad, effects that outdated easy, a not so convincing Richard Pryor, and an 'evil' computer. Oh, and an ending scene with Superman carrying Richard Pryor above some really fake pine trees. Oh, and Superman turning coal into polished diamonds. Oh, well...

And Superman IV: The Quest for Peace is neither a masterpiece or an epic, but it is an enjoyable film that has huge plot holes and makes no sense. According to many sources, the original SIV was about two hours long, and the cut that we all know is an hour and a half. Where is all that half hour that's missing? Some of it in the special features in the new Superman Boxset and new SIV release. Unfortunately, it wasn't added into the movie, heck it wasn't even remastered or even cleaned a little, it looks terrible in the deleted scenes.

The thing that makes this movie more enjoyable, is the 'love triangle' between Lois, Clark and that girl from the paper. Oh, that girl's daddy, took over the Planet after it supposedly was in bad financial shape; and they took over, and they transformed it into a tabloid. Whatever. The scene that I love the most and makes this movie worth is the :fresh: 'double date' with Lois & Superman and that girl and Clark, it is really good. Oh, and again, Luthor is the villain (should we assume that all Superman villains are hard to produce?) that creates a genetically modified version of Superman taking a sample of hair, some 'nuclear' material (and some fabric) and sending it to the sun...the 'thing' returns, fully clothed (well, most superheroes magically appear with costumes, so we'll let this one fly by), and it's called Nuclear Man; and guess where he gets his powers from? Nope, not from nuclear power, but from the SUN:rotten: ...yep, oh well. Oh, and superman can lift things and build things with his mind:rotten: ...double yep...so the quest for peace is to get rid of all the nuclear arms and send them to the sun (hence why Nuclear Man was born), but also, the story about the Planet being taken over is good. What would've been if the deleted scenes had been properly cut in to this? In the future, we shall know.

It's really fun to watch, however, the special effects look outdated (not as much as SIII). I know that if this movie had been given a proper budget and a better production, we all would've gotten a better products, I do believe it...we all hope one day we can get the uncut version of this movie and say, hey, it's actually good! And keep those good Supes memories even more alive.

Thanks.
Jose M.
